Summary

Description
Deutsch: Al-Medaille von Julius Eduard Bennert, Köln, aus dem Metall des abgestürzten Zeppelins Z II (LZ 5) 1910 (50,7mm, 15,9g), Kaiser Nr. 355; geprägt bei Mayer & Wilhelm, Stuttgart, in Abwandlung einer dort kurz zuvor geprägten Medaille, Kaiser Nr. 330[1]

Rückseite: Unter einer Girlande 12 Zeilen Schrift: Aus dem / Metall / des / am 25. April / 1910 / auf der / Rückfahrt / von Homburg / nach Köln / bei Weilburg / untergegangenen / Z II; darüber der Halleysche Komet; Umschrift: J.E. Bennert fieri fecit. Aluminium præbuit Andreas Bennert. (J.E.

English: Al-Medal by Julius Eduard Bennert, Cologne, from the metal of the crashed Zeppelin Z II (LZ 5) 1910 (50,7mm, 15,9g), Kaiser Nr. 355; struck by Mayer & Wilhelm, Stuttgart, in modification of a medal minted there shortly before, Kaiser Nr. 330[1]

Reverse: Under a garland 12 lines of writing: Aus dem / Metall / des / am 25. Bennert fieri fecit. Aluminium præbuit Andreas Bennert. (J.E. Bennert arranged for the production. Andreas Bennert supplied the aluminium.)

Note: When the Zeppelin Z II, stationed at the Reichsluftschiffhafen in Cologne-Bickendorf, was destroyed by gusty storms on its return flight from a parade in Bad Homburg on April 25, 1910, near Weilburg, the Cologne airship medal collector Julius Eduard Bennert (1856-1929) sent his son Andreas by motorcycle to Weilburg to get hold of aluminum remains of the Zeppelin. From this aluminum, he was able to have 22 copies of a medal minted according to his designs.[2]
