It appears that this picture does not show portuguese soldiers but rather french soldiers in their pre-1915 uniforms. On the following page, you can see portuguese expeditionnary corp arriving at Brest in February 1917 (http://www.bataille-de-la-lys.com/fr/avant_la_bataille/portugal_grande_guerre.html) and you can see that uniform and caps are not exactly the sames. It also appears that, in 1917, no more allies troups used a cap in trenches but were rather using helmets... I really think the legend of this picture is false and that is has to be repalced on oher articles than Portuguese Army and Battle of la Lys ones. Regards

Agreed. The képi, the use of Lebel rifles and bayonets, the webbing (or lack thereof since the soldiers of the picture wear French model 1892 leather braces) all point to this being a picture of French troops in 1914 or early 1915. This must be a case of the source being mislabelled. I'm afraid that in this case the source has more weight even though all evidence points to it being wrong.
For the record the Portuguese wore flat brimmed caps until 1916 and then switched to helmets (which means this pictures neither shows Portuguese troops, nor was taken in 1917), used the SMLE Mk3 on the Western Front and were issued with Mills webbing.
