Shipping Minister GK Vasan told the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday that's Apart from enhancing the capacity of Shipping Corporation of India. The new ships would also replace the container ships scheduled for phase out at the end of their economic life. The Shipping Corporation of India will add 29 container ships to its fleet by 2012, entailing an investment of over Rs 6,000 crore, the government said on Wednesday. The acquisition is part of the shipping major’s ambitious expansion plan under which it will place orders for 33 container ships by March 2012.“The ships being acquired by Shipping Corporation of India would be predominantly used for catering to import/export trade of India. Some of the container ships would also participate in global trade depending on opportunities available,” As per the 11th Plan container ships acquisition programme, Shipping Corporation of India has planned for acquisition of 62 vessels for about Rs 13,500 crore, of which till date SCI has been able to order 29 container ships.Of the ordered 29 container ships, 26 will be delivered to Shipping Corporation of India during the next 2 years on 25-2012. The container ships ordered include product tanker, crude oil carrier, bulk carrier, supply carrier, anchor handling container ships etc. Shipping Corporation of India has present owns 76 ships of 5.1 million Deadweight Tonnage (DWT), besides manning 60 vessels of 0.2 million tonnes DWT. The present acquisitions would add another 1.7 DWT to the existing fleet. It plans to take its capacity to 12 million DWT by acquiring vessels. The Ennore-Manali Road Improvement Project (EMRIP) in Chennai is expected to be completed by June 2013. India at present has 27 shipyards, a share of less than one per cent in the global shipbuilding market. “Expression of interest has been invited from experienced and interested shipyards/firms for participation in a global competition for setting up international size shipyards on BOT (build operate transfer) license on the East Coast and West Coast of India. Vasan said the Indian government is set to build two new shipyards, one each on the East and West coast, on a build-operate-transfer (BOT) basis, the Rajya Sabha (upper house) was told on Tuesday.[[Hi-Tech Ship Building Yards]],Minister of Shipping G.K. Union Shipping Minister G K Vasan has called upon the New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) management to chalk out plans to make up for the shortfall in the Iron ore traffic during the current year. Union shipping Minister G.K, Vasan has visited the port yesterday which they are reviewed the overall performance and the developmental projects of the Port.The issue has restriction of movement on iron ore fines to New Mangalore Port were highlighted during the discussion. The Minister asked the port officials to take up the matter with the state government to ensure revocation of restrictions imposed so that the iron ore traffic flow to the port will not be drastically affected. During the wharf inspection by the Minister, NMPT Chairman P Tamilvanan had explained the various activities, including construction of Coal Berth, construction of Mechanized iron ore handling plant, the proposed site of Container terminal and POL jetty. He had also said the ministry would initiate process of awarding 20 other projects in the same time period that it has providing developing and upgrading container and cargo terminals at various ports in the country. They will issue Letter of Award for six projects within the next 100 days for various ports, apart from initiating the process for awarding another 23 projects,” a senior official told PTI. The six projects to be awarded within the next 100 days include development of a container terminal at Ennore, North of Chennai, at an estimated cost of Rs 1,407 crore. These are the prjects included in the plan is the construction of deep draft iron ore berth at Paradip at an estimated cost of Rs 591 crore. It will have another project for construction of deep draft coal berth, estimated to cost Rs 479 crore. Other projects include conversion of a general cargo terminal into a container terminal at Tuticorin Port (Rs 312 crore), setting up of mechanised iron ore handling facilities at New Mangalore (Rs 277 crore) and development of berth for handling bulk cargo at Goa (Rs 252 crore). The official said all the six projects have been approved by the Union Cabinet and a host of domestic and international companies, including Gammon Infrastructure, ABG Infralogistics and DP World are competing for them. he process of awarding projects is being expedited on the direction of Cabinet Secretary K M Chandrasekhar, he said. “Besides, the cabinet secretary has asked the Shipping Ministry to ensure that requests for proposal for the other 23 port projects are invited by the June-end and final awards be given by December,” he added.The 23 projects include the long-pending construction of the fourth container terminal at Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) in Mumbai, estimated to cost around Rs 6,700 crore. It has includes the creation of Mega Container Terminal at Chennai with an estimated cost of Rs 3,105 crore.

A statement said, adding that Cochin Shipyard CMD M Jitendran presented a cheque of the same amount to Shipping Minister G K Vasan here today.The dividend consists of Re one per equity share on 11.32 crore fully paid equity shares of Rs 10 each amounting to Rs 11.32 crore and Rs 70 per 11.91 lakh fully paid 7 per cent non cumulative preference shares of Rs 1,000 each amounting to Rs 8.34 crore,” the statement said. It added that continued profit of the yard has resulted in an increase in net worth from Rs 429.42 crore in 2007-08 to Rs 566.49 crore in 2008-09.The company achieved a total shipbuilding income of Rs 986 crore during 2008-09 against Rs 582 crore during 2007-08. The Paradip Port Trust will sign the model concession agreement (MCA) tomorrow with a consortium led by Hong Kong-based Nobel Group for construction of a deep-draught iron-ore berth at the port entailing Rs 591.35 crore investment.The Union shipping ministry official source has said “The MCA will be signed on July 1 in the presence Union Shipping Minister G K Vasan,” Other partners to the consortium are Gammon Infrastructure and state-run trading company MMTC. The consortium has formed a special-purpose-vehicle Blue Water Iron Ore Terminal for executing the project.The berth will have a capacity of 10 million tonnes per annum and has to construct on a build-operate-transfer basis. The concession period is 30 years.Paradip Port Trust Chairman K Raghuramaiah will sign the MCA.The government is also working on other projects to be awarded to the Port for capacity augmentation.These include construction of a multipurpose berth and mechanisation of coal handling facilities.

July 1, the National Sample Survey would cover education, migration, employment and unemployment, and consumer expenditure.This would provide a sound database for taking evidence-based policy decisions in these critical sectors on conjunction with the objectives and priorities of the Central Government, according to the Union Minister for Statistics and Programme Implementation Mr G.K. Vasan. Inaugurating a conference of Central and State Statistical Organisations here, Mr Vasan called upon statisticians to develop a strong database on various socio-economic parameters to help the Centre and the state governments in policy formulation.The theme of the conference is `Training for the Trainers’ that it has 64th Round of National Sample Survey.Mr Vasan said the subjects for the 64th Round were picked keeping in mind the priorities of Government and the objectives of the Eleventh Five Year Plan. He said the statistics system was being reengineered to produce reliable and timely data on all the important aspects to guide development strategy. Statistical advice has more reliable and timely solutions than a committee of experts.[[Poverty alleviation]]To formulate effective policies and programmes for eliminating poverty, Mr Vasan said the statistical system would need to provide a reliable database for estimating the incidence of poverty in different regions. The National Statistical Commission Chairman, Prof S.D. Tendulkar said the collection of Statistics Act was being amended to bring even the socio-economic survey under the ambit of the legislation.

Nagapattinam Chamber of Commerce, Union Minister GK Vasan shipping Nagapattinam Port has called for efforts to modernize .The port also to commence passenger ferry services to Singapore and Malaysia. Nagapattinam port has an ancient shipping port in Tamil Nadu, Which it had flourishing going into the disuse from 1990 to 2004.it has badly affected by the tsunami on 2004.Asian Development Bank has came forward to rebuild the port which they are taken to the port rebuild cost of Rs 48 crore for the port Road Wharf and relaying activities. Once the port had to rebuild becomes the port active again. The District Chamber of Commerce that the state's modern port facilities need to be competitive. Chamber President Chandrasekaran said, "The Estuary should be deepened to a depth of 6 m, so that small ships could enter into the port premises itself for cargo handling. These are the facilities for the port that should be enhanced to international standards through private participation. He added a delegation led by Chandrasekaran that he has apprised to the vasan for need to modernising the port while he had met with the GK Vasan in Chennai. They had also given appealed to the Minister proposal to commence passenger ferry to Singapore and Malaysia from Nagapattinam.

A regular ferry service between Tuticorin and Colombo will commence on June 13 from the port town of Tamil Nadu. The Shipping Minister Mr G.K. Vasan will launch the service that hopes to trade and tourism between India and Sri Lanka after the war in the island country came to end in mid-2009.The Mumbai-based Flemingo Liners will operate the ferry service with its ship Scotia Prince that it has nine decks with 317 to accommodate 1,044 passengers. The service will initially be operated twice a week and it will take 14 hours to reach from India to Colombo, according to a company press release. A consortium of Flemingo Duty Free Shop Pvt Ltd and Tradex Shipping Co Pvt Ltd, obtained the license to operate the ferry service. The ship will have 40 staff on board and 25 ground staff to help with check-in procedures, immigration, custom procedures and baggage clearance. The ship can also take around 300 tons of cargo.The economy room comes at an early bird offer of $49 (exclusive of taxes) and $65 (exclusive of taxes) during regular periods. The package includes complimentary dinner. Flemingo Liners will attract orders for chartered trips from communities that thrive on trade and business. They will also be looking at attracting corporate groups for conducting team outings on the ship. Tourism and trade between both the countries has always been at its peak with almost 126,882 Indians visiting to Sri Lanka in 2010 and around 239,995 Sri Lankans visiting to India.

The Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) president, G.K. Vasan, has criticised the State Government for not taking effective steps for implementing the scheme “Education for all up to Eighth Standard before 2010.Mr. Vasan said the Government was not serious in implementing the scheme, though the Centre had providing 85 per cent of the cost. He said that on the scheme during the Kamaraj was the Chief Minister of the State the student-teacher ratio was 1: 20, which it had increased to 1: 50.Although the Government claimed that the ratio was 1: 40 in the State in reality, it was two teachers for every 99 students, three for 139 students, four for 179 students and five teachers for 219 students. There were only 75,000 teachers and teacher vacancies had not filled for many years now which against the required strength of 1.60 lakh primary school teachers. Union Shipping Minister G K Vasan on Friday said the Centre would go by the Supreme Court verdict and the R K Pachouri report on implementing the Sethusamudram project. The project is a long time dream of the people of Tamil Nadu and will enhance the economy. The government will implement it according to the submission of the verdict of the Supreme Court and submission of the R K Pachouri committee report that I will work for implementing it. He told reporters on his maiden visit to the town after assuming charge as union minister. The Supreme Court had reserved orders on the project and appointed an expert committee headed by noted environmentalist R K Pachauri. Vasan said his objective would be development of ports in all spheres with modern technology. Tamil Nadu government has starting cordial relations with the centre which he said all nine union ministers from the state would work unitedly to develop the state in all fields. He also lauded the elevation of Meira Kumar as the first woman speaker in the Lok Sabha and said the government would take steps to get the 33 per cent women’s reservation bill passed in Parliament.

The Union Shipping Minister Hon G.K. Vasan has strongly advocated Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode in port investment opportunities in India. Inaugurating “Invest Port”, a conclave on investment opportunities in India, in New Delhi recently Vasan said that the maritime sector plays a crucial role in facilitating India’s international trade. Almost 95 per cent by volume and 70 per cent by value of India’s global merchandise trade is effected through the sea route. To ensure seamless passage of cargo both from and to the port through the hinterland, Vacant said that it involved harmonisation of berth side development, including installation of cargo handling equipment, with marine side development, including enhancement in channel depths, where necessary. Optimum utilisation of the port facilities is required to be achieved through improvement in road and rail connectivity infrastructure.[3]

Shipping Minister GK Vasan told the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday that's Apart from enhancing the capacity of Shipping Corporation of India. The new ships would also replace the container ships scheduled for phase out at the end of their economic life. The Shipping Corporation of India will add 29 container ships to its fleet by 2012, entailing an investment of over Rs 6,000 crore, the government said on Wednesday. The acquisition is part of the shipping major’s ambitious expansion plan under which it will place orders for 33 container ships by March 2012.“The ships being acquired by Shipping Corporation of India would be predominantly used for catering to import/export trade of India. Some of the container ships would also participate in global trade depending on opportunities available,” As per the 11th Plan container ships acquisition programme, Shipping Corporation of India has planned for acquisition of 62 vessels for about Rs 13,500 crore, of which till date SCI has been able to order 29 container ships.Of the ordered 29 container ships, 26 will be delivered to Shipping Corporation of India during the next 2 years on 25-2012. The container ships ordered include product tanker, crude oil carrier, bulk carrier, supply carrier, anchor handling container ships etc. Shipping Corporation of India has present owns 76 ships of 5.1 million Deadweight Tonnage (DWT), besides manning 60 vessels of 0.2 million tonnes DWT. The present acquisitions would add another 1.7 DWT to the existing fleet. It plans to take its capacity to 12 million DWT by acquiring vessels. DWT is the total weight of the ship, including the cargo, crew and fuel. Ennur Manali improvement project by G.K. Vasan The Ennore-Manali Road Improvement Project (EMRIP) in Chennai is expected to be completed by June 2013. The project, originally conceived in 1998 at an estimated cost of around Rs 100 crore, which has facing delay for various reasons including rehabilitation, allotment of funds and others. The delay in the project has pushed the project cost to Rs 600 crore by G K Vasan Union Minister for Shipping. GK Vasan said that till now 32 per cent of the project has to completely that it has Rs 50.50 crore includes Chennai Port Trust's and Ennore Port's are sharing the amount. Shipping Minister G K Vasan said. India at present has 27 shipyards, a share of less than one per cent in the global shipbuilding market. “Expression of interest has been invited from experienced and interested shipyards/firms for participation in a global competition for setting up international size shipyards on BOT (build operate transfer) license on the East Coast and West Coast of India. Vasan said the Indian government is set to build two new shipyards, one each on the East and West coast, on a build-operate-transfer (BOT) basis, the Rajya Sabha (upper house) was told on Tuesday.Hi-Tech Ship Building Yards,Minister of Shipping G.K. Vasan in Lok Sabha yesterday. There are 27 major shipyards in the country, of which six are under the administrative control of the Union Government viz.Cochin Shipyard Limited, Kochi; Hooghly Dock and Port Engineers Limited, Kolkata; Hindustan Shipyard Limited, Visakhapatnam; Mazagaon Dock Limited, Mumbai; Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited, Kolkata and Goa Shipyard Limited, Goa; two under State Governments viz. M/s Alcock Ashdown & Co. Ltd., Bhavnagar; M/s Shalimar Works Ltd., Kolkata and 19 in the private sector. None of the Government shipyards has built large container ships and tankers over the past three years. Government has given in principle approval for setting up a new shipyard of international standard on a Public-Private Partnership mode as a joint venture under the Ministry of Shipping. Shipping Corporation of India has to asked to prepare a Project Report for the new shipyard. Project cost and other details shall be known only after the Detailed Project Report is received.

Union Shipping Minister G K Vasan has called upon the New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) management to chalk out plans to make up for the shortfall in the Iron ore traffic during the current year. Union shipping Minister G.K, Vasan has visited the port yesterday which they are reviewed the overall performance and the developmental projects of the Port.The issue has restriction of movement on iron ore fines to New Mangalore Port were highlighted during the discussion. The Minister asked the port officials to take up the matter with the state government to ensure revocation of restrictions imposed so that the iron ore traffic flow to the port will not be drastically affected. During the wharf inspection by the Minister, NMPT Chairman P Tamilvanan had explained the various activities, including construction of Coal Berth, construction of Mechanized iron ore handling plant, the proposed site of Container terminal and POL jetty. The Union Shipping Ministry has charge a 100 days project Rs 3, 300, G K Vasan had told reporters that he would award six projects for the cargo and container terminals at various ports in the next three months. He had also said the ministry would initiate process of awarding 20 other projects in the same time period that it has providing developing and upgrading container and cargo terminals at various ports in the country. They will issue Letter of Award for six projects within the next 100 days for various ports, apart from initiating the process for awarding another 23 projects,” a senior official told PTI. The six projects to be awarded within the next 100 days include development of a container terminal at Ennore, North of Chennai, at an estimated cost of Rs 1,407 crore. These are the prjects included in the plan is the construction of deep draft iron ore berth at Paradip at an estimated cost of Rs 591 crore. It will have another project for construction of deep draft coal berth, estimated to cost Rs 479 crore. Other projects include conversion of a general cargo terminal into a container terminal at Tuticorin Port (Rs 312 crore), setting up of mechanised iron ore handling facilities at New Mangalore (Rs 277 crore) and development of berth for handling bulk cargo at Goa (Rs 252 crore). The official said all the six projects have been approved by the Union Cabinet and a host of domestic and international companies, including Gammon Infrastructure, ABG Infralogistics and DP World are competing for them. he process of awarding projects is being expedited on the direction of Cabinet Secretary K M Chandrasekhar, he said. “Besides, the cabinet secretary has asked the Shipping Ministry to ensure that requests for proposal for the other 23 port projects are invited by the June-end and final awards be given by December,” he added.The 23 projects include the long-pending construction of the fourth container terminal at Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) in Mumbai, estimated to cost around Rs 6,700 crore. It has includes the creation of Mega Container Terminal at Chennai with an estimated cost of Rs 3,105 crore.

Cochin Shipyard has the largest shipping and ship repair yard in the country, which has posted a 70 per cent increase in net profit at Rs 160 crore for the 2008-09 fiscal.It had a net profit of Rs 94 crore in the previous fiscal.The company also declared a dividend of Rs 19.66 crore for FY09. A statement said, adding that Cochin Shipyard CMD M Jitendran presented a cheque of the same amount to Shipping Minister G K Vasan here today.The dividend consists of Re one per equity share on 11.32 crore fully paid equity shares of Rs 10 each amounting to Rs 11.32 crore and Rs 70 per 11.91 lakh fully paid 7 per cent non cumulative preference shares of Rs 1,000 each amounting to Rs 8.34 crore,” the statement said. It added that continued profit of the yard has resulted in an increase in net worth from Rs 429.42 crore in 2007-08 to Rs 566.49 crore in 2008-09.The company achieved a total shipbuilding income of Rs 986 crore during 2008-09 against Rs 582 crore during 2007-08. Paradip Port to sign concession pact for Rs 591 cr iron-ore berthWednesday, July 1st, 2009

The Paradip Port Trust will sign the model concession agreement (MCA) tomorrow with a consortium led by Hong Kong-based Nobel Group for construction of a deep-draught iron-ore berth at the port entailing Rs 591.35 crore investment.The Union shipping ministry official source has said “The MCA will be signed on July 1 in the presence Union Shipping Minister G K Vasan,” Other partners to the consortium are Gammon Infrastructure and state-run trading company MMTC. The consortium has formed a special-purpose-vehicle Blue Water Iron Ore Terminal for executing the project.The berth will have a capacity of 10 million tonnes per annum and has to construct on a build-operate-transfer basis. The concession period is 30 years.Paradip Port Trust Chairman K Raghuramaiah will sign the MCA.The government is also working on other projects to be awarded to the Port for capacity augmentation.These include construction of a multipurpose berth and mechanisation of coal handling facilities.

July 1, the National Sample Survey would cover education, migration, employment and unemployment, and consumer expenditure.This would provide a sound database for taking evidence-based policy decisions in these critical sectors on conjunction with the objectives and priorities of the Central Government, according to the Union Minister for Statistics and Programme Implementation Mr G.K. Vasan. Inaugurating a conference of Central and State Statistical Organisations here, Mr Vasan called upon statisticians to develop a strong database on various socio-economic parameters to help the Centre and the state governments in policy formulation.The theme of the conference is `Training for the Trainers’ that it has 64th Round of National Sample Survey.Mr Vasan said the subjects for the 64th Round were picked keeping in mind the priorities of Government and the objectives of the Eleventh Five Year Plan. He said the statistics system was being reengineered to produce reliable and timely data on all the important aspects to guide development strategy. Statistical advice has more reliable and timely solutions than a committee of experts.Poverty alleviationTo formulate effective policies and programmes for eliminating poverty, Mr Vasan said the statistical system would need to provide a reliable database for estimating the incidence of poverty in different regions. The National Statistical Commission Chairman, Prof S.D. Tendulkar said the collection of Statistics Act was being amended to bring even the socio-economic survey under the ambit of the legislation.

Nagapattinam Chamber of Commerce, Union Minister GK Vasan shipping Nagapattinam Port has called for efforts to modernize .The port also to commence passenger ferry services to Singapore and Malaysia. Nagapattinam port has an ancient shipping port in Tamil Nadu, Which it had flourishing going into the disuse from 1990 to 2004.it has badly affected by the tsunami on 2004.Asian Development Bank has came forward to rebuild the port which they are taken to the port rebuild cost of Rs 48 crore for the port Road Wharf and relaying activities. Chamber President Chandrasekaran said, "The Estuary should be deepened to a depth of 6 m, so that small ships could enter into the port premises itself for cargo handling. He added a delegation led by Chandrasekaran that he has apprised to the vasan for need to modernising the port while he had met with the GK Vasan in Chennai. They had also given appealed to the Minister proposal to commence passenger ferry to Singapore and Malaysia from Nagapattinam.

Ferry service from Tuticorn to Sri Lanka by G.K.Vasan

A regular ferry service between Tuticorin and Colombo will commence on June 13 from the port town of Tamil Nadu. The Shipping Minister Mr G.K. Vasan will launch the service that hopes to trade and tourism between India and Sri Lanka after the war in the island country came to end in mid-2009.The Mumbai-based Flemingo Liners will operate the ferry service with its ship Scotia Prince that it has nine decks with 317 to accommodate 1,044 passengers. The service will initially be operated twice a week and it will take 14 hours to reach from India to Colombo, according to a company press release. A consortium of Flemingo Duty Free Shop Pvt Ltd and Tradex Shipping Co Pvt Ltd, obtained the license to operate the ferry service. The ship will have 40 staff on board and 25 ground staff to help with check-in procedures, immigration, custom procedures and baggage clearance. The ship can also take around 300 tons of cargo.The economy room comes at an early bird offer of $49 (exclusive of taxes) and $65 (exclusive of taxes) during regular periods. The package includes complimentary dinner. Flemingo Liners will attract orders for chartered trips from communities that thrive on trade and business. They will also be looking at attracting corporate groups for conducting team outings on the ship. Tourism and trade between both the countries has always been at its peak with almost 126,882 Indians visiting to Sri Lanka in 2010 and around 239,995 Sri Lankans visiting to India.

Vasan, has criticised the State Government for not taking effective steps for implementing the scheme “Education for all up to Eighth Standard before 2010.Mr. Vasan said the Government was not serious in implementing the scheme, though the Centre had providing 85 per cent of the cost. He said that on the scheme during the Kamaraj was the Chief Minister of the State the student-teacher ratio was 1: 20, which it had increased to 1: 50.Although the Government claimed that the ratio was 1: 40 in the State in reality, it was two teachers for every 99 students, three for 139 students, four for 179 students and five teachers for 219 students. There were only 75,000 teachers and teacher vacancies had not filled for many years now which against the required strength of 1.60 lakh primary school teachers. The Supreme Court had reserved orders on the project and appointed an expert committee headed by noted environmentalist R K Pachauri.
