Summary

Description
English: Lithography by Lehmann after a painting entitled "Volksopfer 1813". Original size ca. 60×80 cm. School poster for use in class.

The woman at the left must be Ferdinande von Schmettau. The story goes as follows: When the German population was asked to donate for the war against Napoleon, the 15-year-old girl was sad because she hadn't anything to donate. She cut off her beautiful blond hair, sold it to a hairdresser, and donated the money.

The scene is famous and has been depicted several times in German history. For instance in 1862, Gustav Graefs painted it as "Vaterlandsliebe im Jahre 1813" (also known as "Ferdinande von Schmettau opfert ihr Haar auf dem Altar des Vaterlandes", at the National Gallery in Berlin). During WWI, modernized versions of this painting were used for propaganda purposes to make the German population donate for a war again.
