Imagine a plane travelling from point A to B, observed by David at point D. As the plane travels to B, the soundwave from the plane originating at A will travel to David. As the plane reaches B, a soundwave from B will now travel to David, note that CD is shorter than AD. Now, if the time it takes the plane to travel from A to C, plus the time it takes the soundwave from C to reach David, equals the time it takes the first soundwave from A to reach David, the intersection of the soundwaves at David's position will create a w:Sonic boom effect.
