Independent Bonn International School (IBIS) is the oldest international school[1] located in Bonn, Germany.

History

IBIS was founded in 1963 by a group of parents and for many years was called the British Embassy Preparatory School (BEPS). When many of the embassies moved to Berlin in 1997, the school changed its name to IBIS to reflect the broad international nature of the school. Nowadays the school consists of pupils from many English-speaking countries in the world, as well as pupils with diverse language backgrounds.

Location

IBIS is located in a green suburb of Bad Godesberg[2] in a quiet residential neighbourhood, Heiderhof.[3] Being part of this neighbourhood enables the school to play a large role in its community. The school has a modern, well-maintained building that offers a safe, fit for purpose learning environment for its pupils.

Educational Basis

IBIS is inspected regularly by the Independent Schools Inspectorate[4] (ISI) and by the German school authorities.[5] This ensures that the educational standards at IBIS meet both the international and German standards, and enables the seamless passage of its students into the German school system at any point if this is desired.

Since 2001 IBIS has had official approved of the German authorities as an "Ersatzschule der Primarstufe".[6] This means that the requirements of the normal German primary school programme have been incorporated into its long-serving and recognised international teaching programme. This enables the swift continuation of the learning of its pupils after leaving IBIS to attend either other international or German schools.

Memberships

IBIS is a member of the European Council of International Schools[7] (ECIS), the Council of International Schools,[8] the Council of British International Schools[9] (COBIS) and the VDP Verband Deutscher Privatschulen Nordrhein-Westfalen e. V.[10]
