[edit] History

The Patriarchate was founded in Moscow in 1589 and so does the Patriarch role, when the Russian bishops elected their own patriarch, Metropolitan Jonas, without recourse to Constantinople, and the Russian church was thenceforth autocephalous.

Metropolitan Jonas was given the title of Metropolitan of Moscow and All Rus'. He also received the fifth rank in honour after the patriarchs of Constantinople, Alexandria, Antioch, and Jerusalem. It was recognized by Council of Constantinople in 1590 and 1593, as Moscow had sent letters and so does the patriarch role. Significant role in the decision was of the Tzar Boris Godunov.

Abolished in 1721 by the reforms of Peter the Great, it was restored the decision of the Local Council of the Russian Orthodox Church on October 28 (November 10), 1917.
