Pine of Tsar Dušan (Serbian: Бор Цара Душана) was a giant black pine tree located in the courtyard of the old Serbian Orthodox Saint Archangels Church, in the village cemetery in Gornje Nerodimlje, Uroševac, Kosovo[a]. The pine tree was planted in 1336 by Emperor Dušan (r. 1331-1355).[1][2][3][dubious ]

History

The old pine tree (Latin: Pinus heldreichii) as a relict, endemic tree was the decoration of Šar Mountains with its huge size. Pine was over 25 meters high, 1.5 meters wide, crust thickness 10 cm, and it was in a good health. Pine was visited by various delegations and admired them. King Aleksandar Karađorđević in 1926 placed on it memorial plaque with the year of planting. As a historical monument and natural rarity, the pine tree was placed under state protection in 1961. It was given suggestion by state institutions for nature protection, that Šar Mountains National Park should be nominated for world natural heritage under UNESCO protection, because of its biological, geographical, ethnic varieties and cultural and historical heritage. As part of this nomination this Old pine tree was included in the proposal.[4] Saint Archangels Church in Nerodimlje was, together with Pine of Tsar Dušan added on Monuments of Culture of Exceptional Importance list by the Republic of Serbia in 1961. [5]

Destruction

In July 1999, after the Kosovo War, the pine was cut down and burned by villagers returning from exile,[6] as well as the old monastery church of St. Archangel and the whole orthodox village cemetery, before the eyes of the international community. Only the stump remained, which was later burned completely.[7] As the entire complex was destroyed, there are no visible traces of the Dušan's Pine today.[8]
