The term premodern refers to the period in human history immediately preceding the modern era, as well as the conceptual framework in the humanities and social sciences relating to the artistic, literary and philosophical practices which preceded those of modernism.[1]

In chronological terms, it is loosely defined as extending from around the turn of the second millenium (1000 AD) through to the middle of the second millenium (1500 AD).[2]
