Rough Rock Community School is a school in Chinle, Arizona. It is funded by the Bureau of Indian Education.
History
It opened in 1966 as the Rough Rock Demonstration School. It was the first Bureau of Indian Affairs school to be directly operated by American Indians and the first Navajo-operated BIA school. Today, it has some 440 day and residential students, including 166 high school students in grades 9 through 12.
School replacement
A school replacement and improvement project is ongoing. Phase I broke ground on 15 June 2009 and finished in 2010. It included a replacement, 20,333-square-foot (1,889.0 m2) K-8 dormitory with capacity for 86 students.[2] Phase II broke ground on 16 September 2009 and includes a new K-8 academic building and the replacement of two dormitories. The entirety of the project was the first replacement school project funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The project must be completed by 2011. The entirety of the project is designed for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Silver certification.[3]
