Sahak I
Sahak I (Armenian: Սահակ Ա. Մանազկերտցի) was the 19th Catholicos-Patriarch of the Armenian Apostolic Church serving from c. 373 from his death on c. 377. He is the first of the four Catholicoi from the Albaniosid Dynasty in the fourth century.
Biography
Acoording to P' awstos Buzand,[1] after the death of Pharen I of Armenia, Sahak I was selected in a popular assembly as the successor. Awags of the prince of Gardmanac'jor and ten other naxarars accompanied Sahak I to Caesarea of Cappadocia. There the bishop council ordained Sahak I as kat'oghikos or the Catholicos of Greater Armenia. Sahak I followed P'arhen' s work, but the king Tiran, the naxarars and the princes did not took his advice.
During the reign of Arshak II, Saint Nerses I the Great replace the position of Sahak I.[2]
However, in the History of the Armenians of Movses Khorenatsi, Sahak I succeeded Saint Nerses I the Great.[3] He was appointed by Pap without the permission of Caesarea's bishop council and succeeded by Zawen I.[4]
Sahak died in c. 377, endnig his reign as Catholicos and passing it to Zaven I, a near relative.
