Sam Webster (born 16 July 1991) was the 2009 Sprint, Keirin and Team Sprint World Champion at the Junior World Champion and New Zealand national track cycling champion.

Biography

Born in Auckland, Webster attended Auckland Grammar School.[1]

Sam Webster's burst onto the New Zealand cycling scene in 2007 by claiming 4 National Titles and 2 National Records in the Under 17 Age group. Later that year Webster broke the Under 17 Flying 200 Record posting a time of 11.313sec on the restricted gearing of 47x15.

As an Under 19, Webster claimed five national titles and four national records in his two years in the Category. At the 2008 UCI Juniors World Championships in Cape Town, South Africa, Webster was 4th in the Team Sprint, 10th in the Keirin and qualified 6th in the Sprints but after relegation ended in 9th place. In 2009, Webster attend the Youth Olympic Festival in Sydney, where he was granted status of Flag Bearer for the New Zealand contingent. Webster claimed the gold medal in the Mens sprint with a new Youth Olympic Record of 10.356, silver in the Team Sprint and DNF his keirin heat due to unknown circumstances.

In 2009/2010 season, Webster rode in the Elite ranks. He rode at the Oceania Cycling Championships and Melbourne World Cup for the G-Race Professional Cycling Team. At the Beijing World Cup, Webster made his first appearance for the New Zealand National Team at a World Cup, placing 5th in the Team Sprint. He also attended the 2010 UCI Track World Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark placing 5th in the Team Sprint, 6th in the Keirin and 19th in the Sprints.

New Zealand, being a part of the Commonwealth, Webster also was bound for the XIX Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India, he did preparation in Germany, claiming victory in Sprintmeetings in Cottbus, Dudenhofen and Darmstadt. At the Games, Sam was the Bronze Medallist in the Sprint (behind Shane Perkins and Scott Sunderland of Australia) and silver medallist in the Team Sprint where he had a crash.

Sam Webster has competed at both World Cup Classics to date, placing 2nd in the Team Sprint at Melbourne and 3rd in the same event at Cali
