Storage Resource Management (SRM) is the process of optimizing the efficiency and speed with which the available drive space is utilized in a storage area network (SAN).[1]
Data growth averages around 50% to 100% per year. Companies are faced with rising hardware costs and also the increased costs of managing their storage. Storage professionals who are facing out-of control data growth are looking at SRM to help them navigate the storage environment. SRM identifies underutilized capacity, identifies old or non-critical data that could be moved to less-expensive storage, and helps predict future capacity requirements.
SRM has evolved beyond quota management. It now includes functions such as storage area network (SAN) management.
Providers of SRM solutions include APTARE,[2] DataCore Software, Symantec, Northern Parklife, and IBM (Tivoli Storage Productivity Center).
