Sudden (Chinese: 骤变) is a Mediacorp Channel 8 law drama. It starred Romeo Tan, Rui En, Rebecca Lim & Zhang Zhenhuan as casts of the series.

It was broadcast on MediaCorp Channel 8 from 2 September 2013 to 27 September 2013.

Premise

A horrific accident complicates the lives of four lawyers – Fang Qiliang, Cheng Chuning, Guo Weiqian and Sun Dalun.

Losing his mobility as a result of the accident, Qiliang drifts apart from his girlfriend Chuning because of the pain and misgivings he had. Meanwhile, Chuning realised that her memory is receding and she fears that she may soon forget Qiliang.

Weiqian lost her father in the same accident, and his last words were conveyed to her by Sun Dalun, an eye witness who missed his appointment for a promising position in a prestigious law firm.

A young lady, Huang Yi Xin is suspected to be involved in the murder of Zhong Zheng Lie, the founder of a charity organization. Fang Qiliang and Cheng Chuning are her defense lawyers while Situ Xin Mei is the prosecutor of the case. All evidence and three witnesses are unfavourable towards Yi Xin.

Qiliang and Yi Xin’s alibi are on their way to testify in court when they meet with a fatal accident. Guo Zheng Xin dies while Qiliang is wheel-chair bound. Chuning sticks by Qiliang with her unwavering support but he loses confidence and contemplates to break up with her.

Despite both Chuning’s and Gao Feng’s efforts, Yi Xin is subsequently convicted and sentenced to 8 years imprisonment. Xin Mei reveals to Chuning the reason to her mother’s departure. Chuning questions Gao Feng. Unable to forgive her father, she moves out of the house and joins Xin Mei’s new law firm.

Joda forms a mission group and recruits followers through music. One of the members He Jian Ming accuses Joda of deceiving the followers by cheating funds for his personal gains. Jian Ming even files a case against him. Joda engages Xin Mei’s law firm to defend for himself.

Chuning and Qiliang work on Joda’s case separately. It turns out that Jian Ming co-founded the mission group with Joda and is one of its pioneer followers. Jian Ming has been unhappy with Joda since two years ago and recently removed from the mission.

Chuning wants Qiliang to persuade Qian Ming into closing the case quickly by accepting the offered terms. However, Qiliang wants to unveil Joda’s true colours. He thinks that Joda has given his followers false hopes and took advantage of their trust.

Artiste Liao Qiqi wants to cancel her contract with Manager Kang Wenxing so that she will be free to sign a new contract with Starsouth. Bobby of Starsouth brings Qiqi to Xinmei’s firm for legal help. Wenxing suspects Bobby sudden wealth is gained through indecent proposals made to starlets.

Chuning preps Qiqi for the hearing and discovers that Dalun has coached her to give false statements in court. She took over the case, infuriating Dalun.

Shenghua checks on Bobby and meets his idol, Kexuan who makes a suicide attempt. Qiliang tells Chuning that Bobby has been using his manager status to run a high-class prostitution ring. Chuning advises Bobby to settle the case with Wenxing out of court.

After a near-accident with Chuning, Qiliang is reminded of the accident he met with one year ago. Sensing that the accident might have been planned, he decides to re-investigate. Qiliang and Chuning find the culprit’s wife and uncover some doubtful facts.

Shenghua and Wentai have been expecting Qiliang to reconcile with Chuning. The CCTV recording shows Youcai dragging Baofa into the lane before running away. A mystery man walks into the lane and takes Baofa away. However, the man’s face cannot be seen. As Baofa was injured, it is unlikely that he could have knocked into Qiliang the next day. Chuning goes through the video and notices a taxi driving off after the mystery man has taken Baofa away. She asks Shenghua to find the driver. Hongxing refuses to pay alimony and the negotiations fall through.

A mysterious person assaults Qiliang and Flapper dies while trying to protect his master. Both Qiliang and Chuning are devastated. Shenghua regrets going after the attacker who returns for a second assault and steals their memory card. This raises Chuning’s suspicion, as only a few of them are aware about the memory card’s existence.

70-year-old Chen Zuyun wants Qiliang to help him draft a will to bequeath his property to his domestic helper, Yuanyan. Zuyun’s son Chen Huiwu plans to sell his father’s house, claiming that according to a document Zuyun signed, it now belongs to him.
14	"Episode Fourteen"	September 19, 2013 (2013-09-19) PG
Huiwu promises to give Zuyun 30% from the proceeds of the flat sold and provide him with $3000 every month until he passes away. Zuyun rejects the offer and insists on a court trial.

Qiliang sends Chuning to hospital and finds out that she has a brain tumour which could be fatal. She will gradually lose her memory even if she survives. Qiliang is devastated. Chuning contemplates suicide.

Qiliang and Chuning finds out that the woman who did the painting in the old folks’ home was Chuning’s mother, Yirou. It was Xinmei who sent Yirou to the home. Xinmei brings Chuning to meet her mother but Yirou is unable to recognize Chuning. It turns out that her mother is suffering from the same condition as herself.
17	"Episode Seventeen"	September 24, 2013 (2013-09-24) PG
Qiliang does not want Belinda to stand witness for Yuanzhi. Belinda, however, wants Yixin to pay heavily by not giving her any chance to appeal her case. Firm as she might seem, Belinda ends up changing her stand and testifies against Yuanzhi instead. Qiliang suspects that Belinda is under threat.

Yixin is acquitted and freed. At the same time, Belinda’s kidnapped daughter is also released. Chuning deduces that the kidnap is done by someone close to Yixin.

Yixin is determined to start anew. With Dalun’s help, she finds a new job after her release. Seeing Weiqian and Dalun in their blissfulness, Yixin feels bitter and plots to take over everything that Weiqian owns.
20	"Episode Twenty (Finale)"	September 27, 2013 (2013-09-27) PG
Yixin plans to burn Weiqian and Dalun to death so that she can take over Weiqian’s identity. The police suddenly appear and shot Shenghua. Seeing that he is about die, Yixin is filled with anger. Can Dalun and Weiqian survive this ordeal? What will become of Chuning and Qiliang then?

Trivia

• Dai Xiangyu was initially cast as the male lead. Due to his non renewal of contract, Romeo Tan was roped in.
• This is Rebecca Lim (as Huang Yixin)'s second villainous role after Unriddle 2.
• Pan Lingling was originally going to play the role of Situ Xinmei, but she had to turn down her role to undergo surgery to remove her breast cysts around Show 1 of Star Awards 2013. The role was given to Constance Song.
• At the beginning of each episode before the opening video, footage of Romeo Tan and Rui En in Tasmania is shown and this will be linked to the later part of the drama. Behind-the-scenes photos of the travel are also shown during the ending credits of each episode.
• Rebecca Lim's second dual role after Crime Busters x 2. This is also her third law drama after two English productions The Pupil and Code of Law.
