[edit] Names
I have used the official name of NUIs Cork and Dublin, as links, in this article and the National University of Ireland article as it is slighty confusing to have two alternate links to the same institution. Djegan 12:39, 20 Jun 2004 (UTC)
[edit] Dublin Metropolitan University
I'm from Malaysia and I need to know is there a university in Ireland called the Dublin Metropolitan University. As I have search the internet but could not find it. I need to know if this U is Dubious. Any one can help?? TQ
- No - an Irish university, if it is to be of good standing, must be recognised in accordance with the law - for instance the "Universities Act, 1997" - this instituion is most likely a diploma mill and does not operate lawfully in Dublin, Ireland. Djegan 13:24, 26 Sep 2004 (UTC)
[edit] Open University
The Open university should probably be on this list, but I cat think what catgory it should go on
- I think Open University should not be in the list as whilst it does have activities in the Republic of Ireland it is not a recognised university, rather it is the Northern Ireland branch of the Open University that operates in the Republic. Certainly it could not be in the universities list, perhaps colleges? Djegan 22:46, 2 December 2005 (UTC)
Although it operates in Ireland, the Open University is based in the UK and is not recognised as a University under Irish Law. An Irish student who is studying with the Open University has the same status as an Irish student who is studying at any of the other Universities in the UK, whatever that entails.
The government has recently begun to crack down on "Internet Universities" claiming to be based in Ireland, if it is not recognised under Irish (Rep.of) law it is not an Irish University.
RE:Exception
The Pontifical University of Maynooth is seen as a private college, not a University, in the eyes of the state and has not been granted degree-awarding authority by the state. Beta

I have removed the further education colleges from this list, as they now have their own list, further education colleges, and have added a link to the main page. Any colleges that were on this list have been transferred to the new list, I'll leave a copy of the old list here in case someone needs to put it back for some reason.
