How certain is it that the district name is derived from the soldier's name, and not vice versa? This is a piece of information that needs to be sourced. Certainly the name Copeland is Scandinavian in origin, but it seems likely to have started as a place name. One would expect a Scandinavian's second name to be a patronymic ending in -son(r). A third name would reflect some characteristic or attribute of the man, and would be added in his lifetime. If the name Kaupland was bestowed on Ulfkeitel, could it have been in connection with the granting of this land? Possibly it was a description of the land (bought land) rather than its name. Where does the Copeland BC leaflet info come from? I work for Copeland BC and have never seen or heard of this leaflet.84.71.7.1 21:31, 3 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Somebody in the council copied the text into a word document and e-mailed it to me in (I think) July 2001. I don't have the e-mail (the computer it was received on has ceased to exist!), but I still have the Word document that was sent as an attachment. It appears to have been issued at the time of the grant (early 1990s?), and from the tone of the writing looks like an official explanation and may have been written by someone at the College of Arms, so maybe the reference should be amended... Copeland: The movie

[edit]

Copeland the movie was filmed in the summer of 2004. It is a social realist documentry depicting Manos, Billingham, Suicidal and Blowsy the butler showing you their daily struggle to be accepted in the society that made them the people they are.

Surely worthy of inclusion.
