Use the HD number

As I can see, for stars in the Bright Star Catalogue, HD number is always used instead of the HR one. In this case, however, HD 217811 redirects here, when it should be the opposite, and I can't reverse it. Also the first name shown in the article should be adjusted accordingly. HD numbers are not always used, WP:COMMONNAME applies. The most commonly used name can be difficult to determine when a star only appears in lists and catalogues. The designation used depends on the type of list or catalogue and doesn't necessarily reflect the most common usage. There are at least a couple of papers referring to this star specifically, and they call it HR 8768. These were prior to its naming as LN Andromedae. In modern papers, HD numbers are more common because they cover more of the stars of interest, whereas HR numbers don't. In any case, not a lot of HR numbers left when you take out those with Bayer and Flamsteed designations, so not many article titles with them. Variable star designations are used where the study is about variability and being variable usually means there is something to study so there are quite a few papers, but not so many in this case. So ... pick one that isn't misleading and don't worry about it too much. Include common synonyms in the lead. Lithopsian (talk) 17:15, 3 December 2018 (UTC)
