Literal meaning

[edit]

Article needs literal meaning of province name, and Han Tu. Badagnani 07:26, 11 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The Nom Foundation and Chinese Wikipedia both give . Badagnani (talk) 04:59, 27 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Anybody please tell me why we need Chinese character for a modern Vietnamese province? In Vietnam, these characters are meaningless to the common people and are not officially used. How do you put Chinese characters for Kontum Province? Even the Vietnamese Wiki on this topic does not use Chinese characters.--Vuhoantran (talk) 09:49, 21 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hán Tự

[edit]

I couldn't believe the name Kiên Giang was rendered from Hán tự because this province was founded and named by South Vietnam government.--Amore Mio (talk) 17:17, 27 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

That's a good question. Even if provinces are new, the names may be old (formerly the name of something other than a province), or else the names are of Sinitic origin and thus have a meaning and phonetics that derive from Chinese. The problem seems to be that there is no accessible source giving the etymologies of place names in Vietnam, as, for example, we have for the names of all 50 states in the United States. If you could find such a source it would be wonderful. Right now we're relying on the expert from the Nom Foundation in Vietnam who provided the list of Hán tự for the province names about two years ago. Badagnani (talk) 17:23, 27 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I couldn't believe the name Kiên Giang was rendered from Hán tự because this province was founded and named by South Vietnam government. I ask for a RS for this Hán Tự (not from nomfoundation, a foundation which rendered almost all VN place name into Han tu without cite anything). Moreover, place name of southern Vietnam was usually mispronounced from a original Hán Tự name (for example, Mỹ Tho is a mispronunciation of "Mỹ Thu", Thoại Sơn (a mountain) is a mispronunciation of "Thụy Sơn"). So, the usage of Hán Tự in theses article should come with a great care.

To Mr. B. If you really want literal meaning, you could add a note next to the name (Kiên Giang (lit. .....)). Don't adding Hán Tự without a proper source.

I really want to help but I haven't got enough source and skill, and I don't want to be reckless. I'm sorry.
