Direct Descendant
[edit]Greetings from New Zealand. Thomas Erskine and Sarah Buck are my paternal third great grandparents. Erskine Thomas Erskine, a retired Major of Her Majesties Bengal Army (as per his New Zealand Death Certificate)is my second great grandfather. I am fortunate that my paternal ancestry is so well documented. It should be noted that John Hampden and Hampden Erskine are one and the same man. His baptismal record of 23 Jan 1818 noted that he is “said to be born Dec 5 1817” GRO Death Record - The Honourable John Hampden Erskine, age 20, Gentleman of No 55 Queens Row St Peters, Newington, Surrey. Informant: Frances Rowbotham of the same address. Death notice published on Saturday 25 November 1837 in the Globe Newspaper, London, England - Nov 19th The Hon. Hampden Erskine, in his 21st year.
It would be prudent to give Thomas Erskine 1st Baron Erskine’s first wife a name i.e Frances Moore, whom he married on 29 Mar 1770 at St Martin's, Guernsey, Channel Islands. They had seven (not eight) children i.e four sons and three daughters.
As for Sarah, Thomas’ second wife, her marriage certificate cites that she was from York Buildings, Marylebone, London, Middlesex. She died on 1 Apr 1856 at age 72 and was buried on 7 Apr 1856 at Brompton Cemetery, Kensington & Chelsea, London. Her burial record and probate records cite her as The Honourable Lady Sarah Erskine from Great Chapel Road. A blacksmith’s daughter https://www.historyofparliamentonline.org/volume/1790-1820/member/erskine-hon-thomas-1750-1823 From her probate’s next of kin, occupation and Ancestry research I have been able to deduce that her father was highly likely to have been William Buck and mother Susannah who resided in Marylebone.
