The William Waring Property is a historic building in Savannah, Georgia, United States. Located in the northwestern residential block of Wright Square, at 12 West State Street,[1] it dates to 1825,[2] making it the oldest extant building on the square. It was built for Dr. William R. Waring, a prominent Savannah physician.
In a survey for the Historic Savannah Foundation, Mary Lane Morrison found the building to be of significant status.[2]
Dr. William Waring
William Richard Waring (1787–1843) was one of Savannah's most respected physicians.[3][4] In 1825, he married Anne Moody Johnston, with whom he had four known children: William Richard (born 1827), James Johnston (1829), George Houstoun (1833) and Anna Mary (1836).[5]
He was one of the founders of Savannah's Temperance Society.[3]
He died in 1843, aged 55 or 56, and was interred in the city's Laurel Grove Cemetery, alongside his wife, who preceded him in death by seven years.
