Adam Hamilton (born July 12, 1964) is an American minister. He is the senior pastor of the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection, a mainline protestant church with multiple locations in the Greater Kansas City area. He is a prominent author, speaker and leader in contemporary Christianity, known for his engaging preaching style, focus on applying faith to everyday life, and authorship of numerous Christian books.

Early Life and Education[edit]

Hamilton grew up in the Kansas City area. He married his wife, LaVon Bandy Hamilton in 1982, and they have two daughters and one granddaughter.

Hamilton attended Oral Roberts University, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Pastoral Ministry in 1985.[2] His undergraduate studies and exploration of his personal faith led him to the theology of John Wesley and the United Methodist Church, and he went on to earn a Master of Divinity degree from Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University where he was awarded the B'nai B'rith Award in Social Ethics.[3]

Professional Ministry[edit]

Hamilton was ordained as an Elder in the United Methodist Church in 1990 and appointed to launch a United Methodist in the southern part of the Kansas City area. The church first met in a funeral home chapel, taking the name Church of the Resurrection, and building their first worship space in Leawood, Kansas, in 1994.

The church continued to grow, adding additional worship space and launching new locations across the metro area in both Kansas and Missouri. Today, Church of the Resurrection is one of the largest United Methodist churches in the United States, with 28,000 adults and children worshipping with Resurrection at six locations in the Kansas City area, online and on television each week.[4]

Hamilton is a sought-after speaker, participating in conferences and events across the country, and a recognized leader of the United Methodist denomination. In 2013, he preached at the National Prayer Service as part of the presidential inauguration festivities,[5] and was appointed by President Barrack Obama to the President’s Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships in 2016.[6]
