It looks like the Escher form uses distorted (nonregular) octahedra, shortened square dipyramid polyhedra. This is or may be described under Compound of three octahedra#Symmetries, but there's no picture of this form (except Escher's art itself). That's used in other Escher images but not in Stars. It can also be viewed as a stellated rhombic dodecahedron, and is already discussed in the history section. —David Eppstein (talk) 04:25, 23 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
