Waitoki[edit]

I reverted the addition of Waitoki to the list of populated places, because the NZ Gazetteer only lists Waitoki. However, there is a Waitoki Stream, from 18/4/1929 to 20/4/1959 there was a Waitoki crossing loop on the Thames Branch, visible in this 1964 photo and Paeahi marae is also known as Waitoki. Page 48 of the POPULATION CENSUS, 1945. Vol. III—MAORI CENSUS showed Waitoki was in Ohinemuri County and had a population of 46 Māori and 13 others. It was also on the 1886 map. Should Waitoki be listed as a populated place? Johnragla (talk) 20:29, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Since it's being placed according to the map based on the link of the area (according to said archive/file from the Matamata-Piako District website), and it does show for them, although not in the NZ Topo Maps nor on the LINZ Gazetteer from a standpoint to be a populated place. But in my opinion, even if it has no active population or people within (and putting aside Stats NZ terms), it should be characterized as a low-level (or minor) populated place (i.e.: a hamlet or a farmstead). jlog3000 (talk) 19:50, 10 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Where exactly is the hamlet? I can only see scattered houses on the map. Johnragla (talk) 20:19, 10 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Like I said, it was only located on the map of that link, which I will share it again: Matamata-Piako District - Wards and Populated Places However, the hamlet doesn't show its name within the other interactive maps. And I wish I could take a screenshot on this website to show as proof. Maybe I can make a mini-map and screenshot it, and later try to send it via email mode as an attached document image file. jlog3000 (talk) 20:35, 10 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I agree it's on several MPDC maps, but I don't see how it can be a populated place any more than thousands of other scattered houses. You mentioned a hamlet. Where is it? Johnragla (talk) 21:20, 10 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I only mentioned it as a hamlet by name because it's at least a bare minimum type of populated place from a standpoint of classification (i.e.: low level unit). Hope that makes sense. jlog3000 (talk) 21:31, 10 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
