Imtiyaz Ali Khan Khandara (1928-2018) was a painter, Marxist thinker, and art historian.

Life[edit]

Famously known as Master Sahab, Khan was born in Rampur, British India in 1928. He was one of the three sons of Fida Ali Khan. Fida Ali Khan was employed as a Tahseeldar in the erstwhile princely state of Rampur. Imtiyaz Ali Khan's paternal uncle was the legendary Vina player Wazir Khan. [1] [2]

Jagirs[edit]

Ustad Mohammad Wazir Khan along with his brother Tehsildar Mohammad Fida Ali Khan (father of Imtiyaz Ali Khan) held a jagir of 4 villages.Two villages Dhanari Sharkhi(big village) and Naya Gaon(small village) in present day Rampur and one more village in present day Uttarakhand and fourth village near district Shahjahanpur.[3].

Arms and Ammunition[edit]

In addition to khanda which the family of Naubat Khan possessed and was redesigned on the design of Hazrat Ali's Zulfiqar,the Nawab of Rampur Hamid Ali Khan issued atleast 4 guns in the name of Ustad Mohammad Wazir Khan.The details of which are given in the PhD thesis: Ustad Mohammad Wazir Khan and his prominent disciples by Rati Rastogi, RohilKhand University.Each gun was recognised by a Number alloted by the State armoury.Tehsildar Mohammad Fida Ali Khan,the younger brother of Ustad Mohammad Wazir Khan owned a licensed branded Revolver till his death in December 1947.[4].

Havelis[edit]

  • Haveli at Bazariya Mullah Zareef given by Nawab Yusuf Ali Khan on 26th April 1857.
  • Haveli at Katra Jalaluddin,Rampur owned by Ameer Khan Khandara
  • Haveli and Deewan khana in Qazi Gali,Rampur owned by Tehsildar Fida Ali Khan ( father of Imtiyaz Ali Khan).
  • State residence given to Ustad Mohammad Wazir Khan in front of Rampur Fort which now houses the Head Post office in Rampur.[5].

Cuisine[edit]

All the Naubat Khanis were fond of good food. They were able to develop their own cuisine. Rice preparations were included in their meals and Kabab featured regularly. Rakabdars from the court of Awadh were employed in their kitchens.

Naseeruddin was a Rakabdar who was employed at the house of Imtiyaz Ali Khan. He was addressed as Peerji as he shared his name with Chiragh Dilli. This family had great respect for the Sufi saint. Peerji was an expert kababiya and he came from Awadh. His father was employed with the Nawab of Rampur.

It was said that if anyone from this family doesn't take Dessert after each meal than he is not a Naubat Khani.

The preparation at their kitchens were so rich in Ingredients that once Nawab Hamid Ali Khan said that if this family was not fond of such good food they could have houses made of Gold and silver.

Writings[edit]

Imtiyaz Ali Khan has been the editor of Musaddas Tahniyat-e- Jashn-i-Benazeer.[6] He has also done extensive work on Mughal Miniatures.

Political career[edit]

Imtiyaz Ali Khan was associated with the Communist Party of India.
