Previous by-election without last winning party[edit]

Bristol South East was a special case as the Conservatives were only awarded the seat the poll topping Labour candidate was ineligible. What was the last by-election where the party that actually topped the poll the previous time didn't stand? Perhaps a wartime by-election that swapped seats amongst National parties? Removal of information[edit]

Perhaps the most notable thing about this by-election was that the party which won the previous election didn't stand. That is notable because it is highly unusual. For some reason, that information has been removed twice, firstly as "doubtful", then as "non-notable", with a complaint that the previous instance involved a criminal. You are conflating two things. Kilfedder had won under his banner. Stonehouse had not. And the awarding of Bristol SE to the Tories and their decision not to re-contest was entirely sui generis, with no modern comparable. By all means expand on Kilfedder's party situation, but to link it to Stonehouse and Bristol SE is undue/non-notable/tenuous and downright misleading. All IMHO of course!
