Houses[edit]

I see on the school website that the houses are named after early settlers of the Wakatipu area. It would be interesting if someone could expand the article and identify these people more fully. For example, I presume Fox House is named for William Fox (goldminer), and that article could do with a bit of fleshing out.-gadfium 19:10, 5 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Controversies section - undue weight[edit]

When we add content to an article, there is always a risk of giving undue weight to issues and topics that are news-worthy at the time, but where they will soon cease to be notable or will have little lasting impact. See:Wikipedia:Recentism. I am probably as vulnerable as any other editor to being overly influenced by recent events. There is some useful guidance at WP:10YEARTEST.

Many (if not most) high schools have some issues of bad behaviour of a few students, and this occasionally reaches the news. In my view, the issues currently listed under the Controversies heading will not be relevant or notable in 10 years time. There is a significant risk that including these issues now gives a misleading impression of the school as a whole (especially when taken alongside articles about other high schools in New Zealand). It also gives undue weight to these issues, given that positive issues about the school, such as [1], [2], and [3] are currently not mentioned. My suggestion is to delete the section. The possibility of a second school being required (from the first source) is worth including in the article. Marshelec (talk) 06:53, 11 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that they should not be there, mainly for the reasoning you mention about the 10 year test / pretty much all high schools will experience the same or similar thing. One such controversy is about vaping. I mean, really? It seems to me to be way too minor to be listed, and students aren't exactly connected to the school either despite attending it. —Panamitsu (talk) 07:05, 11 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Should we remove the controversies section on these articles: Shirley Boys' High School and Rangi Ruru Girls' School, aswell? yvanyblog(talk) 07:16, 11 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Discussion about the controversies sections in other articles should be held on the talk pages of those articles. I will put both of these on my watchlist, and contribute my thoughts. Each should be considered on its merits. Marshelec (talk) 07:27, 11 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
