Hi, I saw that you have Les Editions de Minuit on your to do list. It was posted to Cleanup and I've just had a good go at it (and moved it to Les Éditions de Minuit). Fabiform 23:01, 26 Jan 2004 (UTC)

Yes, been there a long time unfortunately, since before Wikipedia supported accents :) user:sjc

Re your Betfair comment in Bot (I think it was you) I wonder if you have a reference for this, or if you know someone at Betfair who told you this. Psb777 07:02, 10 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Re:Football pages[edit]

See user_talk:SimonMayer - I think I'm just about recovered from the shock about Luggy. There are some former players listed on the Plymouth Argyle F.C. page, most are meaningless stubs at the moment and many others have yet to be created, if you remember these players would you like to write about them? Also do you know who these 100 Argyle legends are? I think it could be worth putting on the page.

Betfair bots[edit]

I was perhaps the earliest operator of bots on Betfair. Whereas I could not say I operated with their approval I never hid from them what I was doing. I also never got priveleged access to any info that would help me. On the other hand, when their official position was anti-bot, they never discouraged me. I claimed to them I was good for the market, they never looked me in the eye to deny this, and the official position is as you now see. Interesting! Paul Beardsell 07:59, 17 Mar 2004 (UTC)

I very nearly updated the page and thought: It's one thing to boast of my bots to one other person, it's another to advertise to the whole world that Betfair have an API. But, what the heck, why not: About this time last year I was told there were getting on for 20 operators of bots. The number must be much greater now. Do you still run bots on Betfair? Paul Beardsell 11:49, 17 Mar 2004 (UTC)

That's good to hear. I too am doing fine. Since I sold my business I've been literally circling the globe, attending conferences, arts festivals, etc etc since Jan 2003. I rent a couple of Linux servers and monitor them daily over the Internet. My Betfair winnings double my income and then some. Including me and you I now know three people who make a living out of bots at Betfair. Paul Beardsell 15:26, 17 Mar 2004 (UTC)

History of literature[edit]

Sjc, don't know if you have any interest, but I picked up this article, which it looked as though you'd intended to write but eventually stopped working on halfway through? Anyway, I've run out of gas a little farther in, and I was thinking perhaps you've left it alone long enough that you have some more ideas, and would be willing to expand it even more. If not, obviously somehow it will get done, but I figured that your interest in it originally made you a good person to ask for help. Thanks! Jwrosenzweig 18:44, 18 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Excellent! Don't worry, I wasn't asking you to write the entire rest of the article! :-) I just figured you had something in mind at the outset, and perhaps some of it still needed to percolate into the article. I look forward to your additions -- especially in the more modern stuff, where I am sorely lacking. Jwrosenzweig 18:54, 18 Mar 2004 (UTC)
I agree with you that it has great potential, and share your fears about ethnocentrism. Sadly my work in literature was very Western Civ-oriented (well, not exactly sadly -- I enjoyed it, but it limits me for these purposes), so what I've been able to add has focused more on Western Civ than anything else. That's partially why I was hoping to draw you back, as I assumed you had some experience in other culture's history. I don't feel as though we should be cutting stuff on Europe....just expanding our coverage of other cultures. I tried to fake my way through the Chinese literature section, and quickly decided it would be more disastrous than leaving it blank. Are there places where it feels ethnocentric in how it talks about things (as opposed to what it currently covers)? I didn't mean to do that at all, but fear it happened. How can we make the article more balanced? Jwrosenzweig 19:11, 18 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Hmm... if you speak Cornish, maybe you should start the Cornish wikipedia? User:Node_ue

Yes, but that's against the spirit of Wikipedia (what you said in my userpage, that is)! Plus, your friends surely aren't the only ones who speak Cornish? Most non-English Wikipedias started with one person, and after some time (between a week and a few years) attracted attention of other capable editors, sometimes because they were invited by the founder, and sometimes because they stumbled upon it accidentally... Remember, you would be making a great contribution to the language... the first encyclopedia in the language... as well as the first INTERNET encyclopedia in the language... and the first FREE encyclopedia in the language... But after all, the choice is ultimately yours so... anyways... Best wishes :) - Node

Java[edit]

Hi. Please disambiguate "Java" on your user page. For example, Java. Thanks. RedWolf 23:05, May 20, 2004 (UTC)

Redwolf, good spot but the link is there precisely so I can pick up non disambiguated references to it. I know perfectly well what the correct link is since I did an awful lot of the original disambiguation bac in the days of / disambiguation :) Sjc
