New page reviewer granted[edit]

{{safesubst:require subst|template=New Page Reviewer granted|1=

Hi Cukie Gherkin. Your account has been added to the "New page reviewers" user group. Please check back at WP:PERM in case your user right is time-limited or probationary. This user group allows you to review new pages through the Curation system and mark them as patrolled, tag them for maintenance issues, or nominate them for deletion. The list of articles awaiting review is located at the New Pages Feed. New page reviewing is vital to maintaining the integrity of the encyclopedia. If you have not already done so, you must read the tutorial at New Pages Review, the linked guides and essays, and fully understand the deletion policy. If you need any help or want to discuss the process, you are welcome to use the new page reviewer talk page or ask via the NPP Discord. In addition, please remember:

  • Be nice to new editors. They are usually not aware that they are doing anything wrong. Do make use of the message feature when tagging pages for maintenance so that they are aware.
  • You will frequently be asked by users to explain why their page is being deleted. Please be formal and polite in your approach to them – even if they are not.
  • If you are not sure what to do with a page, don't review it – just leave it for another reviewer.
  • Accuracy is more important than speed. Take your time to patrol each page. Steps such as checking for copyright violations using Earwig's copyright violation detector, checking for duplicate articles, and evaluating sources (both in the article, and if needed, via a Google search) for compliance with the general notability guideline are mandatory and will take a few minutes per article.
  • Please review some of our flowcharts (1, 2) to help ensure you don't forget any required steps.
  • Use the message feature to communicate with article creators and offer advice as much as possible.

The reviewer right does not change your status or how you can edit articles. If you no longer want this user right, you also may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. In cases of abuse or persistent inaccuracy of reviewing, or long-term inactivity, the right may be withdrawn at administrator discretion. If you can read any languages other than English, please add yourself to the list of new page reviewers with language proficiencies. ~~

Hi[edit]

Sorry to bother you, but I'd like you to take a look at these articles (mostly from Voltron). It seems to me like they are definitely not notable, but I wanted to ask someone first.

I would sooner not get involved in this, but I will say that if I came across Ultraman Belial or Ultraman Tregear, I would either boldly redirect them or open a discussion on WP:AFD based on the reception section being almost exclusively built on primary sources. - Cukie Gherkin (talk) 00:33, 18 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
User:50.113.53.158: Take them to WP:AFD. You don't get "permission" from individual editors to mass-redirect articles. Toughpigs (talk) 01:53, 18 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Toughpigs: It is acceptable for a new editor to ask for a second opinion before performing a BLAR, and arguably even commendable. Keep in mind that IP addresses would have to ask someone else to create the AFD page for them anyway, since they can't create pages. QuicoleJR (talk) 21:28, 23 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, and that's what they did, for two of those articles. This "asking permission" thing was a developing pattern for this IP. As Cukie Gherkin agreed on the IP's talk page, the appropriate venue for contested BLARs is AfD. Toughpigs (talk) 21:42, 23 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

A barnstar for you![edit]

The Video Game Barnstar
You deserve ten of these. You have created so many articles on characters who I thought would have gotten them long ago. Little Mac, GLaDOS, Ridley, Isabelle, and more have all resulted from your work. You are one of the best editors the Video Games project has ever had! QuicoleJR (talk) 21:21, 25 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@QuicoleJR Much obliged! it's always nice to have someone who enjoys my edits. - Cukie Gherkin (talk) 21:27, 25 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Clarifying "characters from video games"[edit]

Hello!

I noticed that you removed Category:African-American characters in video games from several articles that I added it to with the rationale that "Category should be reserved for characters from video games." However, these are articles about characters that have appeared in video games. For instance David Tapp is a playable character in Saw (video game) and Tombstone (character) appears in Marvel Heroes (video game), Spider-Man (2018 video game), and Spider-Man 2 (2023 video game). Could you clarify what criteria you would use to determine what marks a character as being from a video game? Thanks.

Vegantics (talk) 19:40, 20 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Vegantics Hi, thank you for reaching out. In general, the WikiProject for video games tends to avoid categorizing characters who are not generally understood to be video game characters in categories about video game characters. So, for Spawn, despite appearing in video games, he's not generally a video game character, and categorizing him as such can make it difficult for people who are looking for informatjon on video game characters specifically. - Cukie Gherkin (talk) 20:07, 20 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, @Cukie Gherkin, that makes a lot of sense especially to avoid WP:OVERCAT. However, there are instances like David Tapp who is the central character in Saw (video game). It seems like an omission to not categorize the character as such for those who are looking for information on that video game. This is not my area of specialty by any means so I'm happy to defer to other editors in the video game space, but there are certainly edge cases to this approach.
