Just wondering

Hi again David. I was just wondering if you saw my List of properties (Central Park West Historic District). I posted it here but thought it might have been overlooked when I noticed it was archived. Please let me know, note there is absolutely no hurry to do these, I was just wondering if I should continue creating the articles now or later or whatnot. Thanks. IvoShandor 09:59, 10 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I figured just as much, I ain't worried bout no deadlines round here. If you have a press pass to the Tribeca Film Festival I can see why Central Park West might not be where you are hanging out at the moment. : ) Thanks for the thanks, thank you for your great contributions sir. My, those are some mighty fine photographs. IvoShandor 15:35, 27 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Cardozo Law page

Hey David,

I undid your delete, and tried to explain in my edit description, but the message was truncated. I intended to say: I undid a large deletion of many section including Publications, Faculty, Clinics, Student Groups, Alumni, etc. I agree with David, pages should be free of dizzying minutia, however, there is an alternative to broadly censoring huge swaths of information. Useful information about Journals, Alumni, Faculty, and programs are useful and regularly found on law school wikipedia pages. Refining, better articulating, and condensing this information would be more helpful than hastily wiping the slate clean.

I'm really just trying to help out, so please let me know if there are certain sections you dislike, and I will undertake their improvement. Any help or examples of exemplar pages would be appreciated.

Thanks,

The Daniel Rodriguez Photos

Dear David,

I liked your photos of Daniel Rodriguez. I started his article on Wikipedia, but then backed away to let others do the great job of editing that they did on the site. You really brought out the best in Daniel on these photos. Can you advise if I can post one to my website? I don't plan to sell it. I sort of did some artwork on the one with his eyes closed already and was wondering if it wouldn't be a problem for me to post the art that I created with it. If it's a problem please let me know. I can send you the work that I did with it via email. I see that you gave permission for it to be used in anyway, but I want to be safe with this. Please let me know how I can go about getting permission to post it and the steps.

Thanks David.

Keep up the good work. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by JournalSquareNYC (talkcontribs) 11:02, 16 April 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Oh err... well thanks for the kind word! Actually we could use a photograph on the WikiProject Fashion, maybe you'd be interested in joining our team ? Even if you don't have the time, I might come back to you with a few questions regarding images, you can guess how important they are for a wikiproject like that. Thanks for your time! Thanks!

Thanks for the barny my man… glad to see your wikibreak didn't last too long! I've got one of those laying around here for you, too, I'll see if I can dig it up. -Pete 21:40, 20 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Just a reminder

As it comes up every once in a while on your talk page, please do keep posting your name as part of the file name of images that you contribute to Wikipedia. It is handy for us lower level users trying to see who's doing what where. While at work today I found another photographer who does this, and was able to handily contact the photographer directly for something different but related, which he was more than happy to provide to us for free--I'm not always on top of looking for the user name and everything, but using your real name on the uploaded file itself is excellent. You do good work for Wikipedia and you've been a real sport about helping people get necessary celebrity photos and other photos for articles, please keep contributing. KP Botany 01:24, 21 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, how sweet, even though many would disagree with you! There are a lot of editors who have respect for areas where Wikipedia can and should excel, and these editors tend to spend too much time getting run over by trucks, instead of writing articles, or uploading photographs.
PS Does this mean you'll get me an autographed picture of my favorite movie star? KP Botany 03:47, 22 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Good work on the press pass. This is yet another reason to have your name on the images you upload--people can check you out on Wikipedia. I've done film festivals, so a few comments about stuff you probably already know or can figure out, but just in case! Try to plan to attend openings, what films have North American premieres, United States premieres (although the former more likely), and what's playing opening night specifically, and prioritize these when you can (NOT to the exception of some movie you're dying to see, of course)--this is usually listed better in the press package than in the program. You would not believe who I have gone to film festival openings with. For foreign films opening in North America, the director may attend. Also, if someone really famous shows up the emcee may announce this before the film starts. Foreign directors may bring neighborhood foreign nationals as their guests to the openings, like world famous artists, dancers, scientists, nobel laureates, former heads of state, to name a few, so if you can, shoot the directors with their guests. Try to get Gyllenhaal looking sweet, not dorky, or road-kill spooked, like everyone else shoots him. KP Botany 04:41, 22 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

just a reminder, david, you are in volation of wikipedia policy. wikipedia is not a platform for self promotion.

Just a reminder, David, unsigned anonymous IP addresses with vendeta missions are generally sock puppets. KP Botany 20:39, 27 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Jeff

I asked the same question at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject LGBT studies#so does anybody know why Jeffpw left?. Perusing the last dozen or so revisions of User:Jeffpw suggests that he was having trouble with not being able to use fair use images in articles. He started this a thread on ANI, now archived at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/IncidentArchive230#Abu badali seemingly stalking again, and at my talk page, User talk:Coelacan#Could use some help, please, but didn't give enough information to pin down instances of stalking by User:Abu badali. I'm not really sure what to do without that important detail. coelacan — 04:18, 22 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

That's a good idea. He edits some of the more stressful areas of the wiki, though; I can understand how he'd get fed up. To be honest I haven't put extensive work into any controversial pages in about two months. I don't know how Jeff can do battle day in and day out. =/ coelacan — 04:36, 22 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
For what's its worth, I sent him an e-mail a few days ago, just to let him know how much he will be missed and how valuable his contributions to Wikipedia have been. Jeff does excellent work on small articles, being willing to do the sort of careful research that a minor biography deserves, but doesn't seem to always get on Wikipedia. But for some reason, he attracts busy-bodies who really go after him, this in spite of being able to deal well with people who drive me insane--he didn't let me get to him, which is pretty astonishing. He is a great asset to Wikipedia, and it is a tremendous loss to not have him editing articles. KP Botany 04:45, 22 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia Policy

You really need to read up on policy and please research a little better. Hughey 15:32, 25 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately, you haven't read the article. There is a copy of it I placed on User:Croctotheface's Talk page.--David Shankbone 15:40, 25 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Al Franken

I'm not an administrator, David, you'd better message WJBscribe. And it looks like there's some sockpuppetry going on, so you might want to take it to AN/I. Dev920 (Have a nice day!) 15:41, 25 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi David. Since this was a new user, I echoed the {{uw-3rr}} warning that Croctotheface had left. Hughey had not reverted since the 3RR warning, and hopefully is unlikely to now. The 3RR rule had definitely been broken, but we don't block new users for it until they've been warned of it. Croctotheface's 3RR warning came at 15:16 UTC, so further reverts after that are blockable. coelacan — 17:12, 25 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

So what you're saying is that you don't believe that Al Franken is for Gay Marriage, Gay Adoption, Gun Control, or global warming? I was not, nor I guess were you, the author of these assertions, but I believe them to be true. Hughey 19:42, 25 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hughey, what I'm saying is that WP:V and WP:BLP are non-negotiable policies, and you can be blocked for violating them. And for the record, I'm pretty sure he's not "for global warming". coelacan — 23:03, 25 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Tribeca photos

Wow! That's about the best photo I've ever seen of Martin Scorsese, and what a hot and fine photo of Brinkley--you should send her an 8X10 with a thank you. Excellent work on behalf of Wikipedia, David. KP Botany 03:09, 26 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The Kerry Washington is stunning, also. And simply a nice photograph, so much better than our other one. KP Botany 03:11, 26 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I really like that Scorsese picture. I find that is just exactly how Martin Scorsese is supposed to look in my mind's eye. By, the way, I got a chance to look at the high-res version of your self-portrait. Does that press pass really say "Wikipedia"? How'd you score one of those? :)--Pharos 03:15, 1 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Afro

I naturally count an IP address as less than an established user, so when I saw the IP's message I wasn't going to act upon it, even before I saw your message. Thanks, though, for following up! Nyttend 18:08, 26 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I appear to be attracting more attention from the IP; s/he's telling me to ignore you altogether and put it up, and that s/he'll help me upload it if I will. I've not done as many pictures as you have, but I've posted perhaps 100 images, so I know what I'm doing, and I'm not going to do it. I warned the IP against putting it up himself/herself, since I linked to the picture on the Afro talk page. Please check, by the way, my talk page for the IP's comment: I'm not sure, but it sounds like a personal attack (on you) in my mind.
By the way, the subject of the picture isn't Jewish. Nyttend 04:21, 27 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Your contributions have significantly improved the quality of many articles! Cheers to you to ending quite a few image wars over fuzzy free images and copyrighted images! Erik (talkcontribreview) - 16:54, 2 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

(Feel free to put this wherever you like.)

Well, I usually work with film articles (and it's usually unlikely to get free images for these outside of those freely taken at festivals), so I don't dabble too much in portraits. However, I do wiki-link to actors and directors, so I notice that there tends to be switching back and forth between fuzzy free images and crystal-clear copyrighted images (or even ones used from movie scenes, which I think is silly, especially if the actor is costumed). But your contributions -- which are worth the time you devoted, believe me -- are absolutely in line with Wiki's goal of being free, in terms of information and images. —Erik (talkcontribreview) - 17:16, 2 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Great picture of Eric Bana. Whatever you've doing on approaching the celebrities and getting the pictures, keep it up, as it's working for a great collection of images on Wikipedia. I suspect you of being nice to people, as you're getting polite and relaxed, low pressure images that really allow the person to come across--it's interesting how treating another person as a human being puts them at ease. Thank You All

As you all know, some hacker cracked my password and I have been stripped of my admin powers. I can understand an admin. being blocked, but stripped of his powers without a fair hearing or consensus, I can't. I have stated that I changed my password and would like my powers back, however the chastizing going on in [[1]] has sadden me. It doesn't matter how many articles you have written, contributions you have made or how many years you have dedicated to making this project a credible one. A hacker, it seems has the power of making people consider you an untrustful person and turning some people in the community against you.

I have never abused of my powers and I have used Wikipedia as a medium to educate others. Yes, I have no regrets about having made so many contributions to the Pedia. I exhort all of my friends here to make sure that their passwords are strong ones so that you will not have to go through what I am going through.

I did promise some of my friends a couple of articles and as a good Marine I will keep my promise. To my friends here, Thank you for your friendship. Tony the Marine 00:20, 8 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

McGraw-Hill buildings

Thank you, David, thank you! I love it when we're able to improve our image quality (like I did here) and still use free images.

More importantly, if I ever get that article up to featured status we'll be able to use that picture on the Main Page (if I don't find a way to use this one, anyway).

Speaking of which, I've noticed you take a lot of free pics of living people in New York. For the new fashion project, we could use a lot more of fashion people like the one you took of André Leon Talley (mainly designers and journalists; we have some fair-use issues to resolve concerning model pictures). I'm going to try to get a list together of who we need ... in the meantime would you be able at least to be on the lookout for some if we don't have them? (I got Anna Wintour freed up by the Flickrite who took it, but most others could use free images. Daniel Case 16:46, 9 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the compliment! Getting that color was sort of a function of not using the flash. It was sort of a spec shot ... I didn't know if we had any of that station, so I just went and took it.

BTW, would you mind if I cropped your image of Larry Kramer down to a headshot so I can put it in an infobox? Daniel Case 17:57, 10 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

That's why I asked (Something to be said in defense of fair-use for living people, IMO. I could have just gone ahead and done it but there's a certain warmth in the image and I figured that since he had let you into his house to take the pictures that there was a good reason that was there. As it is, only simple courtesy motivated me to ask. Someone else might have just gone ahead and done it). But that pic as is would not adequately show us what he looked like crammed down into an infobox. So I'll crop one of the other ones. Thanks again! Daniel Case 20:47, 10 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for cleaning up after me. I was fighting sleep when I put the infobox together. I chose that picture because, well, I said to myself, if I were a book-cover designer which one of your images would I have wanted to crop down and use on the inside flap or the back cover? I liked that one despite the flash reflecting in his glasses because the arch behind him is just too good ... it tells us a lot about his life (He lives overlooking Washington Square Park? That's some nice real estate (but you already knew that :-)). I like the coveralls and hooded sweatshirt (I'm old-school enough that I refuse to call it a hoodie) ... especially with the pen in pocket he looks like a writer very literally at work. I also thought it was important that he be visibly smiling, since as the article notes further down most of the country knows him, if they do, as this dour activist. And yet he still looks like the Larry Kramer we see on TV.

A true example of collaboration improving an article. Daniel Case 14:02, 12 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hm, a quick look at those three articles (riot, Kramer, Wolfson) shows a huge amount of energy. Well done! &page; We seem to agree on a lot, and I too generally add {{citeneeded}} or whatever rather than cutting; I do however feel free to cut when the dubiously sourced "information" seems mere trivia. Re: Wikibreak

David, thanks for the concern. I just had to take a brief wikibreak because I felt like I was getting too heated under the collar over a dispute with non-free content at 300 (film). You can see what went on on its talk page. I swallowed my pride and extended an olive branch to the admin with whom I was arguing. He didn't respond, but my attempt got me to calm down. I'm just not a fan of brusque action against non-free content, especially 'cause I do my best (or I thought I did) in determining the limited application of images. I'm back and doing a new project now at Spider-Man film series, so everything's normal again. :) Sorry it took a while to respond. —Erik (talkcontrib) - 06:14, 16 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Great free LGBT photos?

Hey there -- I've given the LGBT Portal a jumpstart and I'd like to bulk up the list of selected pictures (right now we have 6, and I only really like 3 of them). If that list could grow to 30, it'd be awesome. Since you're the hardcore photo guy at the project -- if you know of or come across any free LGBT-related pics, could you please add them, send them my way, or suggest them at the portal page. Thanks. Fireplace 17:59, 16 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

There're no content restrictions at all (so long as it's LGBT-related). Any high-quality image that is striking or interesting enough to stand on its own is probably appropriate. I didn't mean to ask you to go out and make a project of it... just keep it in mind as you go along. Thanks =) Fireplace 18:27, 16 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Bit strong

Hi David. You're coming on a little strong at User talk:HighInBC. Do remember that everyone her (admins included) are volunteers here. Given the number of dynamic IPs around we simply can't have them being blocked for extended amounts of time as that causes collateral damage to other users. Sometimes we are going to unblock IPs that cause trouble again. That doesn't mean the decision to unblock was the wrong one, or that the unblocking admin is personally responsible for the vandalism that happens later. You seem to suggest the fact he didn't respond immediately makes him lazy, which simply isn't true. He's busy working on other things at the moment (in particular a couple of Bots - one at my request) and was involved in discussion of other issues at the time. That's why we have 1,200 admins (and could use a lot more) - so that there are plenty of people to deal with these issues. Sometimes we have to pass problems onto others. I think you've been rather unfair in your comments. WjBscribe 16:12, 17 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

OK, I'm confused now. I've looked into it and the IP address that vandalised today is different to the one HighInBC unblocked in April. If this person's IP address changes, there's not much blocking can do to stop them. WjBscribe 16:30, 17 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
As with any community, we need to work with people we get along with - any admin could have dealt with the issue. If your last interactions with HighInBC weren't postive let it go. Leave him to helping the project in his way. If you have a problem you need an admin to look into it personally, come to me next time - you're very welcome to.
By the way, if pages are subject to heavy vandalism you can request they be protected at WP:RFPP. WjBscribe 16:50, 17 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair enough. Good explanations and i apologize for my tone. -- FayssalF - Wiki me up® 03:06, 18 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Well, my first thought is that this is somewhat, um, sordid. But I'm not sure that it makes sense for us to evaluate uploads based on what we assume, or even what we know, about a person's motivation for contributing. There's an argument to be made that they serve an educational purpose and are freely licensed content, so they aren't really outside the bounds of our mission (so to speak).

That said, there are really two issues; one is whether or not we want to host these at Commons (which should really be discussed at commons:Commons:Village Pump), and the other is their use in articles. The latter might be the tougher issue to straighten out (so to speak), as it is conceivable that the uploader might be more invested in their use than other editors at those articles. Is there anything particularly troubling right now, other than the question of, um, good taste? Jkelly 21:27, 18 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
