Macbeth[edit]

Thank you for fixing links to Macbeth (opera), but hundreds are left. Will you fix those as well soon? I think in case of a move to a new name without a redirect, the links should be fixed first, before the move leads to nonsense in hundreds of cases. I'd like to hope that's all an April Fool's joke, but the pedantic name change seems to be planned to stay, sigh. -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:13, 1 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like this has been handled by others. And the reason I did things the way I did is that there is a process to ensure links to disambiguation pages get fixed whereas nothing would prevent everyone from just losing interest if that step isn't done. * Pppery * it has begun... 15:06, 1 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Draft:The Crimean slave trade[edit]

Hello, Pppery! I noticed you removed the deletion request from Draft:The Crimean slave trade with the motivation: "Sorry, I don't see any specific speedy deletion criterion this meets. Conduct allegations are not a reason for speedy deletion - take them up in the appropriate venues for them", so I was wondering if I might ask you: what would be the appropriate venues for them? I am concerned about this page that should be deleted for a number of reasons, but since I mainly write articles and rarely do anything else in Wikipedia, I am unaware to which page I should go, or which template to use. Could you be kind enough to help? It would be very much appreciated. My best greetings, --Aciram (talk) 08:39, 3 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page watcher) @Aciram: Besides which, you should never use the {{db-reason}} template directly. Speedy deletion is only permitted for the various criteria that are explicitly described at WP:CSD; each criterion has one or more criterion-specific templates. If a page matches one of the CSD criteria, you should use one of the associated templates; if a page does not match any of the CSD criteria, it's not eligible for speedy deletion. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 17:29, 3 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Partially disambiguated page names[edit]

Thank you for all the good work pouring worms back into the can I opened. For the ambiguous Bhavana (actress), existing redirect Bhavana (Malayalam actress) might work, though Bhavana (Kannada actress) appeared in one Malayalam film Otta. Fossa (animal) I think is correct, or at least acceptable: the alternative meaning is Fossa (genus) and both obey our conventions for disambiguating taxonomy: Mammal genera are often qualified by (genus), though there are a few (mammal)s in there and more specific qualifiers such as (bat) in the subcats. Thanks again, Certes (talk) 08:42, 8 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The problem I was referring to is how to disambiguate Bhavana (Kannada actress) versus the other actress who is an Indian actress who predominantly appears in Malayalam and Kannada language films. For the Malayalam actress I prefer Bhavana (actress, born 1980). The only thing I can think of there is to invoke WP:NATURALDIS and move her to the less common but still used Bhavana Ramanna.
For Fossa (animal), I agree Malagasy civet is fine as is but given that there are other scientific names disambiguated as (animal) it would be reasonable to expect Fossa to be the same, which makes it partially disambiguated. Like Praya_(animal), Eunoe (animal), and others. See also User:Estopedist1/Taxons and disambiguation * Pppery * it has begun... 14:18, 8 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I see the problems. Skipping those two still leaves this exercise doing a lot of good, even if it doesn't achieve perfection (and if it did, new errors would soon arise). Draft restorations[edit]

Hello, Pppery,

When you restore a draft that has been deleted due to CSD G13, you have to make a minor edit to the page or it is immediately eligible for speedy deletion again. There is a list of draft pages where this needs to be done at User:SDZeroBot/G13 eligible.

If you help out at WP:REFUND, you'll find most admins use User:SD0001/RFUD-helper to avoid having to handle this step manually. As far as I know, these "minor edits" after page restoration are just required for CSD G13s. But if you restore PRODs and articles deleted through AFDs, then those deletion tags need to be removed after restoration. Thanks very much. Liz Read! Talk! 01:33, 10 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I did try G4 in may cases. For the ones I PRODed G4 doesn't apply because there was no prior AfD (only prior speedy deletions under criteria that don't seem to apply to the new version), and either the original creator is long-gone or the creation was so long ago that I think it's unlikely there will be new interest in recreating. My apologies[edit]

Hey @Pppery I wanted to apologize for the mistake with the roster templates.

I was trying to update the rosters and just putting those rosters more in line with what other independent teams do which is just put the roster itself into the main team page instead of creating a template for it instead.

I don’t really know how the depletion process works so I figured it would be better for me to get more info on it.

Wikipedia:Non-free content criteria deletions[edit]

Hi Pppery! I was wondering if there is some database report and/or quarry which tracks deletions under WP:NFCCE? It currently has a grandfather clause exempting things from before 13 July 2006, which strongly suggests the section is in need of updating. I would normally propose we just eliminate the grandfather clause, but I can't say I have heard of deletions as NFCC enforcement. (I am wondering whether simply directing people to CSD or FfD as appropriate would be more efficient/less CREEPy, and figured talking to people who use NFCCE is probably a good first step.) Thanks, HouseBlaster (talk · he/him) 22:03, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I've always interpreted that policy section as describing deletions under F7, not as an independent basis for deletion. * Pppery * it has begun... 22:36, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I think it is describing something different. The catch-all F7d has a seven-day holding period, but NFCCE says 48 hours (for things uploaded after 13 July 2006, due to the grandfather clause). Replaceable non-free media have a 48-hour holding period, but that bullet point of NFCCE does not limit its applicability to enforcing only replaceable media. HouseBlaster (talk · he/him) 22:52, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I think it's a bad attempt at describing F7 that has drifted from both the CSD wording and actual practice and I've not seen any deletions that reference that policy rather than citing F7.
To the extent it attempts to prescribe a new deletion process it doesn't have the authority too. Anyway, I would replace that section entirely with "Files that do not meet these criteria may be speedy deleted under criterion F7 after an appropriate waiting period." * Pppery * it has begun... 22:56, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@HouseBlaster: I came here after seeing your edit summary. Instead of discussing such changes on Pppery's or any other user's user talk page, it would've been much better to discuss them at WT:NFCC since the talk page that corresponds to that particular policy/guideline. Discussing this here is great for the two of you, but it doesn't really give anyone else a heads up that a change is being proposed or that something relevant to that particular page is being discussed. -- Marchjuly (talk) 11:15, 4 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Marchjuly: in hindsight, that was probably a better idea. I originally came here because I wanted to understand the current situation before making a proposal, but that probably could've been accomplished with a post at WT:NFCC and a ping. My apologies. HouseBlaster (talk · he/him) 16:27, 4 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You wrote, in an edit summary: Restore redirect clobbered by draft. I assume that you mean Draft:C-Infinity, which should now itself be a redirect, because I disambiguated it. (I considered tagging the draft with {{hatredir}} and decided that would be a mistake, because the redirect is for a technical mathematical term, which should have the dignity of being primary.) What clobbered what? What did you do? Robert McClenon (talk) 02:27, 4 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

There was a longstanding redirect from C-infinity (lowercase I) to Smoothness. This redirect was overwritten (or "clobbered" in my past self's jargon) by an article on a product, which was later draftified. A smart kitten noticed this and erroneously requested the redirect revision be history split to C-Infinity (capital I), which I complied with, not noticing the error. * Pppery * it has begun... 02:32, 4 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, my apologies that I requested a histsplit to the wrong title/that I didn’t notice that the redirect had already been recreated. I think I erroneously assumed that the capitalization of the draft’s title would have been the same as it was in mainspace - I was wrong. That also explains why I couldn’t find a log entry regarding the draftification when I looked at C-Infinity’s logs after the split — I think I assumed that the previous log entries must have been eaten by the histsplit (somehow), but this makes more sense. Apologies once again. All the best, ‍—‍a smart kitten[meow] 04:55, 4 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Regarding this, do you think it would be worth asking a pagemover to move the redirect at C-Infinity to C-infinity with the delete-redirect flag? The reason I ask is because one of my reasons for requesting the histsplit in the first place, rather than just recreating the redirect (which I didn’t then know had already been done), was so that its history correctly showed the date it had originally been created. At the moment, that creation history is at the wrong title, but (if I understand correctly) this would belatedly move the history back to its original title. I hope you don’t mind the question — I just wanted to get a second opinion before requesting anything, so that there’s less chance of me inadvertently messing anything else up. All the best, ‍—‍a smart kitten[meow] 16:10, 4 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Wikishovel: From my perspective, I don’t know if there’s a codified right or wrong way. In general, I personally prefer the WP:HISTSPLIT version of things, as it means that the page history from before a redirect was overwritten doesn’t stay moved to draftspace (where it may be harder to track, and might potentially end up deleted under G13), as well as allowing for a clearer indication of how long a redirect at the title has been around for when someone looks at its history. However, at the same time, that’s my personal view; and I’m unsure if there’s any firm guidance for new page patrollers on the matter (perhaps someone at WT:NPR might know?). History merge query[edit]

Hi Pppery, just a query. I created Bassam Mahfouz without referring to the draft at all, my understanding was that a history merge was to fix cut and paste moves. None of the content from the draft was copied to the article. AusLondonder (talk) 17:44, 4 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You're right, and I realized that and reverted the history merge a minute later. * Pppery * it has begun... 17:44, 4 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for that! Unfortunately I created the article by clicking on a redlink on mobile, I wasn't aware about the draft and it made one editor particularly angry. AusLondonder (talk) 17:47, 4 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Personally I tend to be a bit more willing than many other people are to history merge multiple versions of the same article together even without a formal cut and paste. But it was wrong for me to do so over the objections of the author of the version I was history merging to. * Pppery * it has begun... 17:46, 4 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I am not "particularly angry", simply disappointed. An inexperienced editor created Draft:Bassam Mahfouz at Wikipedia:2024 UK local elections night editathon, where I was in a training capacity. Yes, it took them quite some time, and for sure it was not the greatest draft ever. But now they get no credit whatsoever for their work. It is not easy getting newer editors involved, and is it any wonder that they get discouraged. Edwardx (talk) 18:00, 4 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That's unfortunate, it's also unfortunate that you didn't communicate your concerns properly with me - in fact you incorrectly nominated the article for speedy deletion within two minutes of the talkpage message to me, giving me no time to respond. Page lock[edit]

Hu Pppery, I found out that this page was protected from moving. However, the RM is due here. I never found this until I closed for a second time. I do say you unprotect the move prevent and may out back after page move; as a matter of fact, I can't see much moving recently. Or maybe am a bit blind😂 Safari ScribeEdits! I am WP:INVOLVED so should not use my admin tools here. Please request at WP:RMTR. * Pppery * it has begun... 21:55, 4 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
My bad! It's true. I also saw your talk notice (though I can't date when), but encourage you not to be discouraged. You're a good editor and better admin; the most I love when closing rm. Kudos! Safari ScribeEdits! Talk! 21:57, 4 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
