Alberta highway shields

Hi there,

Have you been following the conversations at Talk:List of Alberta provincial highways#Copyrighted material and User talk:117Avenue#WP:NFLISTS and WP:NFCC? I am trying to explain to Hammersoft that the custom highways shields that used to be listed on List of Alberta provincial highways were useful in displaying the different types of highway shields in Alberta. However non-free policy usually prohibits their use on list articles. Your support in saying that this use is actually useful, WP:NFLISTS #4 and WP:NFCC #8, would be appreciated. 117Avenue (talk) 00:55, 26 January 2010 (UTC)

New Bullet needed for New York City Subway

Hi,

I saw that you created an A diamond bullet recently. Thanks for that!

We also need a 4 diamond for the {{NYCS Jerome}} template. Can you create that? Thanks! Acps110 (talkcontribs) 00:27, 8 February 2010 (UTC)

Bookshelf images

Hi Svgalbertian -- thanks for your interest in spicing up the bookshelf images at Wikipedia.org, as they definitely need improvement.

We were looking for a repeatable symbol that clearly represented "size of the encyclopedia", so that we didn't have to include words such as "pages" or "articles", since then the logistics of providing translations would also need to be included in the multilingual design. My original effort -- uniformly sized books, like an encyclopedia set -- was difficult to interpret as "books" rather than "elongated ribbed rectangle" when repeated. So I put together a set of varied rectangles in a very basic image editor, with a few extra line segments to represent titles or labels. It was just meant as a sketch, to be replaced by someone more talented, but I suppose it's been a few years waiting...

I don't have the originals anymore, but they weren't high resolution anyway, although it does look like someone has reduced the dimensions of this image by about two thirds from my first upload.

In SVG, it should be easy to recreate the varied rectangles -- it certainly doesn't have to match the details of the current image. And if desired, perhaps with vector art you can create a more uniform "encyclopedia set" that reads well at small sizes. You'll probably also want to discuss the color with others -- the bright blue was arbitrary, so I don't know if something closer to the dark blue link color would be desirable, or something less saturated, or in more of a contrasting color...

Anyway, I look forward to seeing the results when you are finished! — Catherine\talk 19:05, 14 April 2010 (UTC)

Now that it is vector, the image scales much better:

I copied your image exactly. But if someone wants to do updates or tweeks, vector images are easily editable. If you have some ideas, or want to start a dicussion about updates to colour, etc. I would be happy to participate. Cheers! --Svgalbertian (talk) 20:09, 15 April 2010 (UTC)

Your username

When I first encountered your username I thought it stood for "Savage Albertian" (like David Chatters, maybe?) Then I though, "Nah! Maybe it's an Albertian from Sverige." Now, alas, I've concluded you're simply an Albertian who knows their way around an .svg file. How disappointing! An editor has nominated one or more articles which you have created or worked on, for deletion. The nominated article is List of Canadian flags. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also Wikipedia:Notability and "What Wikipedia is not").

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion(s) by adding your comments to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of Canadian flags. Please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate.

NYCS bullets

Hi! Thanks so much for updating the orange M file. I'm sorry if I put you through the misery of that Commons deletion request. (I did gain a better understanding of copyright and trademark, though it's still elementary to me.) One question I have: how do you determine the bullet colors? I'm just curious. Tinlinkin (talk) 07:03, 26 June 2010 (UTC)

The only bullets I really changed the color on was the Eighth Avenue Line, it just seemed wrong to me so I looked at a couple of different sources (see Template talk:NYCS color). The other colors were chosen by User:Flamurai from "Colors based on printed MTA map", which probably means he scanned a map and used a color picker in some image editing program.--Svgalbertian (talk) 14:03, 26 June 2010 (UTC)

CRT Telecine

Is this better? I removed some of the detail that I assume was just to illustrate the labels, but if there's anything that needs putting back in, I'll do so. NikNaks talk - gallery - commons 14:42, 26 June 2010 (UTC)

  • Very nice. The only thing I am unsure of is if the light represents and entire frame of the film in each color or does the CRT "scan" the each frame with a tiny beam of light? To be safe we should probably use just a thin beam of light as was depicted in the orginal. Thanks again and keep up the good work.--Svgalbertian (talk) 14:53, 26 June 2010 (UTC)
I'm not really sure how best to show that. Should I just copy the line that ran through the middle from the original diagram? NikNaks talk - gallery - commons 19:36, 26 June 2010 (UTC)
I would just reduce the "beam" to be as thin as a line, then it should be fine.--Svgalbertian (talk) 01:07, 1 July 2010 (UTC)

Place Ville-Marie

Hello there, I have been creeping on your user page, and noticed you saying that you are now in Montreal. I am hoping you could do me a favor since I am stuck in Edmonton. First read Talk:Place Ville-Marie#Floors, where a while back I started a discussion on the discrepancy of the number of floors. The website says that there are 45 above the ground level, but all the locals said the top floor is number 47. I suspect that there are 46 floors, but the number 13 is skipped, as was commonly done back then. Unfortunately I was unable to convince any of the Wikipedians in Montreal to visit the building to confirm my theory. Would you mind checking it out? Thanks, 117Avenue (talk) 05:29, 29 June 2010 (UTC)

I noticed you updated the Rhode Island Seal image that was recently featured on the Colbert Report. I believe there is still an error in the date on the seal. New Manitoba shields

Do you have photos that show these with that script typeface? Second, it's OR to change the layout of the elements of the shield. If you're trying to get around copyright for a version that removes the bison, just remove the bison and don't do anything else. Second point, but the version at the top of the infobox should be as it actually appears on the road, even if that's a copyrighted image. A second version minus the bison can be created for use in {{jct}} since at 20px, the bison isn't going to be visible. Imzadi 1979  22:12, 9 December 2010 (UTC)

Here is a photo. The text logo is part of Manitoba's 'spirited energy' brand introduced in 2006. The images I am creating are without the Bison and was planning on only introducing them as part of the {{jct}} template. My bot does not have premission on Wikipedia, so I will not be creating a similar non-free set.--Svgalbertian (talk) 22:26, 9 December 2010 (UTC)
I wasn't sure, which is why I asked. Imzadi 1979  23:01, 9 December 2010 (UTC)
What does OR mean? I did change the layout slightly, but only because the banner would be off center if I didn't. I was considering drawing my own buffalo, but I felt that it would make the image less representive of the actual shield when it gets enlarged. --Svgalbertian (talk) 00:00, 10 December 2010 (UTC)
OR=Original research. Basically, my concern is that bison-less graphics should only be used in small sizes only, where the lack of that element isn't noticeable. The version at the top of the infobox though should be the real deal since it's at a larger size. We'll have the same issues with British Columbia as well. Imzadi 1979  00:56, 10 December 2010 (UTC)

World cup logo help

Hi Svgalbertian, I've seen your contributions on lots of logo pages, and given your name I assume you're comfortable with SVGs. I uploaded a bunch of World Cup country bidding logos which I extracted from FIFA's bidding reports. However, two of them didn't work properly and I'm not sure why. Although I've uploaded a lot of SVG files, I've simply extracted them from PDFs; if things go wrong I don't know how to fix it. Can you help? I'll give you details if you are able to assist. Thanks, -Gump Stump (talk) 23:01, 10 December 2010 (UTC)

I've got a few methods on dealing with tricky PDF's, I would be happy to help. What are the details?--Svgalbertian (talk) 01:42, 11 December 2010 (UTC)
Great, thanks. One of them is File:Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup bid logo.svg. As you can see, the "1" in 2018 is smaller and looks like it has been converted to a raster somehow, even though it looks fine in the PDF. The other one is the logo for the Qatar 2022 bid, which I haven't uploaded yet because it turns into a 2.5MB SVG file. I can send you both PDFs via e-mail if you'd like to take a look at the source documents. -Gump Stump (talk) 19:51, 12 December 2010 (UTC)
I sent you an e-mail--you can reply to that if you'd like me to send the PDFs. -Gump Stump (talk) 19:54, 12 December 2010 (UTC)
The logo uses gradient effects that might be beyond what most SVG programs can handle. When I open the file in Inkscape 0.48 the lettering turns purple, and gradient effect of the 1 is lost. When I convert the file with PDF2SVG I get a proper looking gradient, but it has with hundreds of steps. The PDF2SVG file I uploaded shows a librsvg bug but I am unsure if it is a known bug or not. Rendered at the size displayed in the article, the bug dissapears. In the file you uploaded the gradients were converted to raster. For the other numbers they are a raster background clipped to the shape of the number, for the 1 the shape was also rasterized. In the past, I think I have seen Adobe Illustrator rasterize an effect that is does not how to convert to SVG. Hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions.--Svgalbertian (talk) 04:45, 13 December 2010 (UTC)

I've reverted your restoration of the non-free seals of Nevada, Tennessee and Minnesota to this article. WP:NFCC, WP:NFG and WP:NFLISTS all apply and decide against such use. It is appropriate for the respective seals to be on articles regarding the seals, but in gallery format such as this, in a list such as this, it is not appropriate and violates those guidelines and policy. Please do not restore the images. If you have questions, ask. Thank you, --Hammersoft (talk) 16:31, 5 April 2011 (UTC)

The images I replaced them with are free versions from http://usembassy.de/. They are of poor quality, and not accurate to the versions currently in use, but still illustrate the seals in question.--Svgalbertian (talk) 16:41, 5 April 2011 (UTC)

  • Thanks for the barnstar! I had completely forgotten about the Saskatchewan signs. I have put in a request at HRMB to remind myself. I probably will finish it within a month.--Svgalbertian (talk) 22:19, 17 September 2011 (UTC)

TSX-listed companies redux

Nice job keeping those lists up to date. I've lost access to the monthly TSX eReviews, so I'm glad someone else has been able to pick up the mantle. Mlaffs (talk) 18:35, 5 November 2011 (UTC)

The script

Can you please rerun the script? The MTA has updated their colors page. [1] Try to keep it from crashing again! — Train2104 (talk • contribs • count) 21:08, 15 November 2011 (UTC)

That orange is super weak   . Perhaps we should go with Pantone colors instead of the RGB. Try it yourself, enter 165 here.   The only official colors are the Pantone colors, and the Pantone website is widely used on Wikipedia for doing conversion. --Svgalbertian (talk) 21:39, 15 November 2011 (UTC)
That light orange may not look right to us, but it matches the square on the MTA link, so I would say go with it. — Train2104 (talk • contribs • count) 22:20, 15 November 2011 (UTC)
Plus, notice that both the (A), Port Jefferson Branch, and Harlem Line have Pantone 286 yet they all look different. — Train2104 (talk • contribs • count) 22:22, 15 November 2011 (UTC)
I did the update, but I am still not happy with the orange. I have opened it up for discussion at Template talk:NYCS color.--Svgalbertian (talk) 23:40, 19 November 2011 (UTC)
The 3 has not been updated. Also see my reply on the template talk.— Train2104 (talk • contribs • count) 20:00, 20 November 2011 (UTC)
The three has been uploaded. These are both the same image: . The issue is that Commons won't purge it's cached copied of the files. I have put in a note at the village pump.--Svgalbertian (talk) 20:34, 20 November 2011 (UTC)

Looks like you'll have to run the script yet again for the 6 Av bullets. — Train2104 (talk • contribs • count) 23:58, 21 November 2011 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification

Hi. In S&P/TSX Composite Index, you recently added a link to the disambiguation page Atco (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

It's OK to remove this message. Also, to stop receiving these messages, follow these opt-out instructions. Thanks, DPL bot (talk) 10:37, 19 December 2011 (UTC)

Invitation to events: bot, template, and Gadget makers wanted

I thought you might want to know about some upcoming events where you can learn more about MediaWiki customization and development, extending functionality with JavaScript, the future of ResourceLoader and Gadgets, the new Lua templating system, how to best use the web API for bots, and various upcoming features and changes. We'd love to have power users, bot maintainers and writers, and template makers at these events so we can all learn from each other and chat about what needs doing.

Check out the Chennai event in March, the Berlin hackathon in June, the developers' days preceding Wikimania in July in Washington, DC, or any other of our events.

Best wishes! - Sumana Harihareswara, Wikimedia Foundation's Volunteer Development Coordinator Sumanah (talk) 14:34, 16 February 2012 (UTC)

Companies listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange

I have a few questions about the "Companies listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange" category that you (help to) maintain. Would you please help me with them?

  1. What is the source of this list?
  2. How are the companies extracted from the source? i.e. Is it copied manually, or does a computer extract the list and format it for Wikipedia?
  3. If a script extracts the list, is it freely available?

I thought this file was uploaded in a raster graphics format. Then I uploaded File:Istanbul 2008 Olympic bid logo.svg (which is a more comprehensive version, anyway) and replaced it. When I saw it was a SVG version too, I thought it was better to keep the newest since it is more detailed and is already under WP:OLYMPICS naming convention. Dynegy

Hello, Is there a reason why you are blanking entire articles? ie Dynegy? Postoak (talk) 18:54, 27 October 2012 (UTC)

Please do not remove content or templates from pages on Wikipedia, as you did to Rentech, without giving a valid reason for the removal in the edit summary. Your content removal does not appear constructive and has been reverted. Please make use of the sandbox if you'd like to experiment with test edits. Thank you. This is your last warning. The next time you remove or blank page content or templates from Wikipedia, you may be blocked from editing without further notice. Postoak (talk) 19:03, 27 October 2012 (UTC)

My apologies, those were automated edits that went wrong. I have stopped the process. --Svgalbertian (talk) 19:07, 27 October 2012 (UTC)
