Last week's report Next week's report

2eporting the view5[edit]

The top article this week was Aaron Hernandez, the former American footballer who was convicted in 2015 of the murder of Odin Lloyd (#4), and who died this week, seemingly of a suicide in his jail cell. The week also saw the sad deaths of Chyna, sister to NBA star Isaiah Thomas (#18); and former association footballer Ugo Ehiogu (#20).

Elsewhere on the list, it's been rather a quiet week for the biggest regions, with pop culture dominating. The producers of 13 Reasons Why (#2 & #5) & The Fate of the Furious (#3 & #21) will no doubt be delighted to see their hard work still proving so popular; Kendrick Lamar (#13) should be happy with the high placing for DAMN. (#19); and a CBS special on the Bee Gees (#6) saw entries for the last surviving Gibb brother, Barry (#11); and for youngest brother Andy (#17), not himself a Bee Gee.

As usual, some significant dates; Easter (#12) is a commemoration of, if you are a believer, one of the most important events in the history of our species. April 20 (420 (cannabis culture) (#9)) isn't. The Top 25 Report is truly a land of contrasts. Interest came from afar as well - a Google Doodle commemorated Ghanaian entrepreneur Esther Afua Ocloo (#25); and Reddit reacted to ravens (#14) and regarded some unreal real estate (#8).

For the week of April 16 to 22, 2017, the 25 most popular articles on Wikipedia, as determined from the WP:5000 report were:

Rank Article Class Views Image Notes
1 Aaron Hernandez C Class 3,427,392
The former American footballer - sentenced to life imprisonment in 2015 for the 2013 murder of Odin Lloyd (#4) - was found dead in his prison cell on April 19. His death has been ruled a suicide.
2 13 Reasons Why Start Class 2,094,579
People are still watching the Netflix series, starring Dylan Minnette (pictured) and Katherine Langford (#15).
3 The Fate of the Furious C Class 1,563,444
People are also still watching the 8th movie in the The Fast and the Furious franchise, currently sitting 2nd in the 2017 worldwide box office, behind Beauty and the Beast.
4 Murder of Odin Lloyd Start Class 1,380,588 Lloyd, a semi-professional American footballer, was shot and killed in Massachusetts on June 17, 2013. Aaron Hernandez (#1) was convicted of his murder in 2015.
5 Thirteen Reasons Why Start Class 831,106
With the Netflix series still popular, no surprise to see the source material, Jay Asher's novel, still on the list.
6 Bee Gees C Class 777,950
April 16 saw the CBS broadcast of Stayin’ Alive: A Grammy Salute to the Music of the Bee Gees. Songs of the Manx disco legends were performed by the likes of Celine Dion, Panic! At the Disco and Stevie Wonder, as well as Ed Sheeran.
7 Deaths in 2017 List 687,952
If the last entry prompted you to start singing "Stayin' Alive", this would probably be the most appropriate time to stop.
8 The Simpsons house C Class 680,065
Reddit this week discovering that in 1997 a replica of 742 Evergreen Terrace, the house from apparently still-running cartoon series The Simpsons, was in Nevada built for a contest run by Pepsi. The contest winner chose the cash alternative, and the house was repainted. The house included a swing set and Bart's treehouse, but no word on if it includes the giant head or the portal to the third dimension.
9 420 (cannabis culture) C class 646,523
In 1971 a group of high-school students in San Rafael, California regularly arranged meetings to hunt for a hidden cannabis crop at 4:20pm. 420 has subsequently become associated with cannabis culture in general, and April 20 has thus become a day associated with cannabis. The article is down about 400k on last year's placing.
10 Bill O'Reilly (political commentator) B class 628,399
Fox News terminated the employment of their long-standing presenter this week, after a history of sexual assault settlements were revealed by The New York Times, resulting in a backlash and significant advertising withdrawal.
11 Barry Gibb B class 626,144
Barry Gibb, the last surviving member of the Bee Gees, was at the Grammy Salute to his and his brother's band earlier this week.
12 Easter B Class 616,582
The most important day of the Christian calendar, marking the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It was held on the same day in both the Western and Eastern calendars this year. A four place drop on last year despite only dropping about 30k views.
13 Kendrick Lamar B Class 539,531
The American hip hop star's fourth studio album, Damn, has topped the US Billboard 200 chart and the Canadian Albums Chart, as well as going number 2 in places like Australia, Norway and the United Kingdom.
14 Ravens of the Tower of London C Class 535,957
Reddit again, learning about the ravens that valiantly stand guard over the United Kingdom. Should they ever leave the Tower of London, the British Crown will collapse and the nation shall fall. It is for this reason[citation needed] that the guards at the tower are called Beefeaters and not Raveneaters.
15 Katherine Langford Stub 505,559
The female lead in 13 Reasons Why (#2), staying popular along with the series.
16 North Korea B Class 503,416
The heavily-armed East Asian state is continuing to be involved in a war of words with the United States. Personally, I'm rather hoping it stays a war of words, as I'm planning a holiday in November and nuclear holocaust would rather put a damper on that.
17 Andy Gibb B Class 483,593
Andy Gibb, the younger brother of the three Bee Gees had a number of hits in the late 70s in his own right, but sadly died of myocarditis in 1988 following battles with drug addiction and depression.
18 Isaiah Thomas (basketball) B Class 482,647
The two-time NBA All Star's sister, Chyna, was sadly killed on April 15 in a car crash.
19 Damn (album) Start Class 456,651
DAMN.
20 Ugo Ehiogu Start Class 444,526
The English professional footballer died suddenly this week at the age of 44 following a cardiac arrest. In his career, Ehiogu won the Football League Cup twice and was capped by the England team four times, as well as being the first black man to captain the England U21 team.
21 The Fast and the Furious C Class 432,125
The eighth entry in the eighth highest-grossing film franchise is doing alright. It needs another $200M to bgin pushing against the next two franchises, X-Men and Batman.
22 Opinion polling for the French presidential election, 2017 List 425,900
The French presidential election, 2017 came on the Sunday after this chart, but there was still sufficient interest in the pre-election polls. Forecasters predicted the final two would likely be centrist Emmanuel Macron and National Front leader Marine Le Pen, but as we know, polls are never right these days, except, as it turned out, this time.
23 Alexis Ohanian Start Class 424,993
Ohanian, the co-founder of regular report contributor Reddit, is the partner of Serena Williams, who this week announced her pregnancy. Surprising that Ohanian is on the list while Williams, isn't, but then I suppose people already know what they need to know about the greatest female tennis player in the world.
24 Criticism of advertising Start Class 415,759
Another article provided by Reddit, this time providing the news that four of the United States - Hawaii, Vermont, Maine & Alaska have banned the display of billboards. Thanks to regular report writer Serendipodous for finding the Reddit page.
25 Esther Afua Ocloo Start Class 409,986 The Ghanaian entrepreneur and pioneer of microlending was honoured with a Google Doodle on April 18, which would have been her 98th birthday. Ocloo provided small loans to many people to help start new businesses, and was so regarded that she received a state funeral in Accra upon her death in 2002.
