Our next meeting is tomorrow, September 13, at 6:00 P.M. in Room 344 of the 18th Avenue Library (same time and place as last week). Per usual, food will be provided. We recommend bringing a laptop computer to this meeting if possible.
Meeting Topic[edit]
Websites such as Wikipedia are increasingly faced with clashing legal, political, and cultural environments. Political borders can be hazy and difficult to enforce online, but governments argue that they should be able to block material they deem illegal from being hosted or viewed by their citizens. Adding to the complexity is that every site's physical or virtual servers must live somewhere, presumably placing them under the jurisdiction of one government, even though users might be nearly anywhere in the world.
A few recent examples of national regulations that pose a challenge include Europe's previously-discussed Right to be Forgotten, censorship of Wikipedia in China, and the copyright directives that were approved by the European Union today. Because Wikipedia's servers are located in the United States, that is generally where the legality of its content is relevant; anything not legal in the United States cannot be posted as a result.
