HMS Challenger did not visit Christmas Island for Murray to survey[edit]

'Exploration and annexation' section: HMS Challenger did not visit the island for Murray to survey. The two paras following the statement describe how Murray acquired the samples after returning to the UK at the end of the Challenger voyage. The ref. cited below notes that to support his studies on how coral reefs formed he requested for the two ships mentioned to be diverted to the island to collect samples. His studies of the samples showed their phosphate content and he became involved in the commercial exploitation. Ref. e.g. 'Endless Novelties of Extraordinary Interest', by D.
