The UK Health Alliance on Climate Change (UKHACC) is a British organization of several major health institutions that collectively aim to promote public health by combatting climate change.

In October 2019, former Editor-in-Chief of the British Medical Journal, Richard Smith, was elected as Chair of the Alliance, succeeding professor Linda Luxon.[1]

Origin

The UK Health Alliance on Climate Change (UKHACC) is a British organization of several major health institutions that collectively aim to promote public health by combatting climate change.[3][4] It was formed in 2016 to lead the health profession’s response to climate change in the United Kingdom,[5] as it was realised that health professionals have global networks, and to tackle issues pertaining to climate change, global action was required.[6] It is part of the Global Climate and Health Alliance, which formed in 2011.[7][8]

Other similar organisations include Physicians for Social Responsibility,[3] the American Public Health Association,[3] Australia's Climate and Health Alliance,[3][9] the US Climate and Health Alliance,[3][10] the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment (CAPE),[3][11] and the Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environments (ANHE).[3][12]

Purpose

The Alliance brings together doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals to advocate for better responses to climate change that protect and promote public health.[13] UKHACC emphasises the health co-benefits of tackling climate change, and raises awareness about the relationship between health and climate change.[14]

Organization

In October 2019, former Editor-in-Chief of the British Medical Journal, Richard Smith, was elected as Chair of the Alliance, succeeding professor Linda Luxon.[1] Its director is Nicky Philpott.[2]

Campaigns

The Alliance has campaigned on air pollution[15] and coal phase-out.[16] On 30 March 2017, UKHACC highlighted in a letter to the Health Secretary, Jeremy Hunt, that “more work is urgently needed to prepare the personnel, the systems and the facilities of the NHS, as well as other institutions involved in health care, for the implications of climate change.” [17][18] On the topic of coal, the Alliance has noted that coal, as a driver of climate change, damages human health indirectly by increasing the frequency and severity of extreme weather events like floods and heatwaves.[19]

In June 2019 UKHACC was one of several concerned environmental organisations to write to the then Prime Minister, Theresa May, urging her to urgently commit to the recommendation of the independent Committee on Climate Change for the UK to set a target for net-zero greenhouse gas emissions before 2050.[20] On 12 June 2019, the Prime Minister responded by confirming that a 2050 target would be set in law,[21] the legislation being passed later that month.[22]

It has called for a food carbon tax on all food producers calculated according to the carbon footprint of their products.[23]

Members

Members of the UK Health Alliance on Climate Change include royal colleges, medical journals, faculties and societies.[24][25]
