Michael L. Hess (10 August 1942 - 13 April 2019) was an American professor of cardiology and physiology at the Medical College of Virginia who was instrumental in founding the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation (ISHLT) in 1981, and then served as its first president.

He published more than two hundred research papers, with an emphasis on the increasing prevalence of heart failure and the development of mechanical assist pumps.[1][2][3]

Early life and family

Michael Lees Hess was born in Philipsburg, Pennsylvania, on 10 August 1942.[4][5] He attended Saint Francis University before gaining admission to the University of Pittsburgh Medical. School, from where he gained his MD and completed his residency.[4] After training in cardiology at St Bartholomew's Hospital in London he joined the physiology faculty at MCV in 1971.[4]

He married Andrea Hastillo, who he met at medical school.[5] They had one daughter.[5]

Career

Hess's early work at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) during the 1970s and 80s included taking care of Richard Lower's patients after they had received heart transplants.[6]

ISHLT

In 1980, then professor of medicine in cardiology at the Medical College of Virginia, Hess had begun to contact people active in the field of heart transplantation for the purpose of gathering information on heart transplants and creating a transplant group at the upcoming American Heart Association meeting.[7] One of his letters was sent to Edward Stinson at Stanford University, a colleague of Stuart Jamieson, who sent it to Sir Terence English.[7] The letter included the names of those Hess was contacting and explained that the aim of the group was to share protocols and gather data relating to heart transplantation.[6][7]

Later career

After retiring, he returned to VCU Health to set up a cardio-oncology program in 2013, before retiring again in 2017.[6]

Awards and honours

He received several awards for his efforts in teaching junior doctors, and students of physiology and medicicine.[7] Three of them were university honors, including VCU's Distinguished Scholarship Award, Distinguished Clinician Award, and University Award of Excellence.[7] The cardiology library at the VCU, the Dr Michael Hess Library, is named for him.[7]

Death and legacy

Hess died on 13 April 2019.[5] He was posthumously awarded the 2020 ISHLT lifetime achievement award in April 2021.[8]
