Epidemiology of Thyroid Cancer
In recognition for her scientific contributions, Sosa has been elected into professional societies and has been honored with awards over the years, a few of which are listed below:
Recently, she has studied the evolving epidemiology of thyroid cancer and potentially modifiable risk factors in the exposome. Work with collaborators at the National Cancer Institute described how the increasing incidence of thyroid cancer in the United States appears to be real and not just the result of overdiagnosis because thyroid tumors of all sizes and stages are increasing in frequency, as is incidence-based mortality. A collaborative project with environmental scientists at the Nicholas School of the Environment at Duke University described a potential association between flame retardants in the home and the occurrence and severity of papillary thyroid cancer.

Increasing Surgeon or Hospital Volume Improves Patient Outcomes Following Thyroidectomy and Pancreatectomy
Sosa was one of the first health services researchers in the United States to demonstrate a strong association between increasing surgeon or hospital volume and improved patient outcomes following thyroidectomy and pancreatectomy. This finding subsequently has been replicated for an array of procedures and is used by payers and policymakers as a criterion for driving reimbursement and referral patterns. In 2016, Sosa and her team identified the volume-outcome threshold for thyroidectomy, and these recommendations are now being considered for reimbursement criteria.

Disparities in Access to Care in Endocrine Surgery and Surgical Oncology
Sosa’s research team has focused on understanding disparities in access to care in endocrine surgery and surgical oncology based on patient demographic and clinical factors. They have described significant differences in patient clinical and economic outcomes based on age and race, as well as insurance status. In addition, they have described how practice guidelines are less likely to be followed for these same patient sub-groups. They have shown that this, in turn, is associated with compromised survival.

Prospective Cohort Studies and Clinical Trials in Endocrine Neoplasia
Sosa has been involved in the design and management of clinical trials and prospective cohort studies in endocrine neoplasia. These have focused on developing novel drug therapies for advanced endocrine malignancies, as well as measuring the effect of parathyroid surgery on the psychiatric and neurocognitive disability associated with primary hyperparathyroidism. Sosa has served as the international principal investigator for the largest therapeutic clinical trial performed for anaplastic thyroid cancer, and as a site principal investigator for a number of other trials focused on medullary and differentiated thyroid cancer, resulting in FDA approval of three drugs.

Guidelines to Standardize Practice Patterns for the Management of Endocrine Disease
Sosa’s research team has performed population-level analyses of nationally representative databases to standardize practice patterns for endocrine surgical procedures, including lymphadenectomy, and the management of hyperthyroidism, neuroendocrine tumors, thyroid nodules, and differentiated thyroid cancer. Their findings have been incorporated into the American Thyroid Association guidelines for thyroid nodules, differentiated thyroid cancer, and hyperthyroidism.

Revision as of 21:13, 20 December 2017

Julie Ann Sosa, MD, MA, FACS, is Chief of Endocrine Surgery and Director of the Surgical Center for Outcomes Research in the Department of Surgery at the Duke University School of Medicine.[1] Sosa leads the Duke Endocrine Neoplasia Diseases Group and is Co-Leader of the Solid Tumor Therapeutics Program at the Duke Cancer Institute and the Duke Clinical Research Institute.[2][3] She currently serves as the Treasurer of the American Thyroid Association and will serve as Editor-in-Chief of the World Journal of Surgery in January 2018.

Sosa is an American endocrine surgeon and surgical oncologist, specializing in thyroid cancer.[4] She is internationally recognized for her work in health services research, demonstrating for the first time in the United States a strong association between a higher surgeon or hospital case volume and improved patient outcomes following thyroidectomy and pancreatectomy,[5] as well as optimal extent of thyroid surgery and lymphadenectomy for thyroid cancer. Her contributions have led to the revision of practice guidelines for the management of patients with endocrine diseases.[6]

Education and Previous Appointments

Sosa received her medical degree from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1994 and went on to complete the Halsted Residency in Surgery at Johns Hopkins in 2001, followed by a fellowship in Surgical Oncology as Assistant Chief of Service in 2002.[1] She was a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar from 1996–1998.

In 2002, Sosa joined the Yale School of Medicine as an Assistant Professor of Surgery, reaching the rank of Associate Professor in 2008. While at Yale, Sosa led the Clinical Research Program in Endocrine Cancers at Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale New Haven. In 2012, Sosa joined the Duke University School of Medicine as Professor of Surgery and Medicine (Oncology).

Scientific Contributions

Sosa leads the Duke Endocrine Neoplasia Diseases Group, a large transdisciplinary group of clinicians and researchers focused on improving clinical and economic outcomes for patients with endocrine diseases.[7] The research team focuses on identifying ways to optimize patient clinical and economic outcomes following surgery and in the arena of thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal, and endocrine pancreas diseases. Sosa and her research team have made significant discoveries that have led to improved outcomes for patients with endocrine disease, including thyroid cancer.
