Off-season transactions

Signed Fil-Tongan 6-10 Paul Asi Taulava as their direct-hire recruit for a three-year contract worth P14.4 million and rookie draft pick Bryan Gahol.

Summary

Rookie Asi Taulava debut with a near triple-double of 32 points, 20 rebounds and 8 assists as the Phone Pals rout the comebacking Tanduay Rhum Gold Masters, 90-64 in the opening of the league's 25th season on February 7. The Phone Pals raced to unbeaten 7-0 record before suffering its first loss to San Miguel [1]. Mobiline finished on top with an 11-5 card, despite having a twice-to-beat advantage against Brgy.Ginebra Kings in the quarterfinal round, the Phone Pals were upset and lost two straight, the last one, a heartbreaking 81-82 defeat on Bal David's shot at the buzzer.

Last season's Governor's Cup best import Silas Mills return to the Phone Pals in the Commissioner's Cup, after two weeks, center Andy Seigle was traded to Purefoods for Jerry Codiñera [2]. In their first game following the Seigle-Codinera trade, Asi Taulava played listless in scoring only 6 points and was fined for the below-par showing in a 74-103 loss to Sta.Lucia on July 11. Seeded number 8 in the quarterfinal round, Mobiline lost to top-seeded Alaska Milk.

Reinforced by former beermen import Larry Robinson in the Governor's Cup, the Phone Pals failed to advance in the final four semis, forcing Tanduay to a sudden-death playoff before losing, 75-84 on November 17.
