Elections to South Lanarkshire Council were held on 4 May 2017 on the same day as the 31 other local authorities in Scotland. The election used the twenty wards created under the Local Governance (Scotland) Act 2004, with 64 Councillors being elected, a reduction of 3 members from 2012. Each ward elected either 3 or 4 members, using the STV electoral system.

Following the 2017 election, the Scottish National Party attempted to form a coalition with Labour and the Liberal Democrats which was unsuccessful. The SNP then formed a minority administration.[1]

The overall turnout was 46.9% and there were 2,308 rejected ballots.

Note: "Votes" are the sum of first preference votes across all council wards. The net gain/loss and percentage changes relate to the result of the previous Scottish local elections on 3 May 2007. This is because STV has an element of proportionality which is not present unless multiple seats are being elected. This may differ from other published sources showing gain/loss relative to seats held at dissolution of Scotland's councils.

Changes since 2017

    A-East Kilbride Central North and East Kilbride East SNP councillors Sheena and Jim Wardhaugh resigned from the party and became Independents on 25 May 2017.[3] Sheena Wardhaugh died on 2 June 2019 triggering a by-election.[4]

    B-Avondale and Stonehouse and Hamilton South Labour Party councillors Margaret Cooper and Joe Lowe resigned from the party and became Independents in May 2017. Larkhall Labour councillor Jackie Burns was expelled from the party and is now an Independent following a conviction for breach of the peace.[3]

    C-On 23 June 2017 Rutherglen Central and North Labour councillor Gerard Killen resigned his seat having been elected as MP for Rutherglen and Hamilton West. A by-election was held on 23 November 2017, won by Martin Lennon of the Scottish Labour Party.

    D-In January 2018 Hamilton North and East Labour councillor Davie McLachlan was suspended from the party pending an investigation after allegedly making a racist remark about Anas Sarwar.[5] Following an investigation, he was cleared of any wrongdoing and the suspension was lifted.[6]

    E-On 1 November 2018 East Kilbride West SNP councillor David Watson resigned from the party and became an Independent after a legal dispute over an employee grievance.[7]

    F-In 2018 Clydesdale South Labour councillor George Greenshields resigned from the party and became an Independent.

    G-On 26 July 2019 Hamilton West and Earnock Conservative councillor Mark McGeever resigned from the party and joined the Scottish Liberal Democrats following the election of Boris Johnson as Conservative Party Leader and Prime Minister.[8]

    H-On 12 August 2019 East Kilbride South Labour councillor Fiona Dryburgh resigned from the party and joined the Liberal Democrats in opposition to Labour voicing support for a second Scottish Independence Referendum.[9]

    I-On 29 June 2020, Clydesdale South Conservative councillor Colin McGavigan was suspended from the party over "totally unacceptable and offensive" Facebook posts in relation to the Black Lives Matter protests.[10] On 16 February 2021, Cllr McGavigan resigned from the party and became an independent.[11]

By-elections

On 23 June 2017 Rutherglen Central and North Labour councillor Gerard Killen resigned his seat having been elected as an MP for Rutherglen and Hamilton West.[12] A by-election was held on 23 November 2017, won by Martin Lennon of the Scottish Labour Party.[13]

On 2 June 2019 East Kilbride Central North Independent and former SNP councillor Sheena Wardhaugh died. A by-election was held on 29 August 2019, won by the SNP's Grant Ferguson.
