The American Helicopter Society, International is a professional society in the area of vertical flight. It was formed in 1944. It publishes an official magazine (Vertiflite) and a technical journal (Journal of the American Helicopter Society). Even though it has the word "American" in its name, the membership is international; the focus is also all vertical flight aircraft, including non-helicopter rotorcraft (such as the V-22 Osprey), jet-borne V/STOL (such as the AV-8 Harrier and F-35 Lightning II), and other non-conventional configurations.

Quote from their website: "The aim of the society is not only to emphasize and further engineering excellence in traditional rotorcraft platform disciplines, but also expand this focus to the multidisciplinary fields of vertical flight and related support industries." It gives out many awards for accomplishments in engineering and operations in vertical flight.
