Angelina Eichhorst formally took up her position as Ambassador / Head of EU Delegation to the Lebanese Republic in January 2011. Today, she works for the European Union, as she holds the position of the director of Western Europe, The Western Balkans, and Turkey.[2]

Education

Angelina Eichhorst studied Languages and Cultures of the Middle East at the Catholic University in Nijmegen, and Political Science at the Université Libre in Brussels. She holds special degrees in International Law, Human Rights and the Law of International Organisations.[2][3][4]

Career

Between 1989 and 1996, Angelina Eichhorst worked with civil society organisations in Cairo as well as for the United Nations in New York and Somalia. In 1996 she joined the European Commission in Brussels where she held various positions as technical, senior and policy advisor. In 2004 she became Head of Development and Regional Cooperation at the EU Delegation to Jordan. She held this position for four years before she was sent to Syria in 2008 to head the Syria Delegation's Political and Economic Affairs, Press, Information and Culture section.[2][3][4]

In September 2010, Catherine Ashton, the European Union's (EU) High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, appointed Angelina Eichhorst EU ambassador to the Lebanese Republic. She assumed her post in Beirut formally in January 2011.[2]

On 28 July 2015, Angelina Eichhorst has been appointed as Director for Western Europe, the Western Balkans and Turkey. She will take up her new position in the EEAS headquarters in Brussels on 1 September 2015.[5]

Political views on the euro-integration of the Western Balkans

In an extensive interview for European Western Balkans portal she conducted in May 2016, she talked about relations among the Balkan states and euro-integration. She said that all countries of the region are working together with the EU on various political and security issues saying that the states are already a part of the EU and that there is no perspective of the Balkan states other then European one.[6] Regarding Macedonian and Greek relations she said:

The day Greece and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia can agree on what is called a ‘negotiated and mutually acceptable solution to the name issue, under the auspices of the United Nations’, will be a very important day. I believe nobody contests the notion that, good neighborly relations have a real positive impact, politically and economically, on the region.[6]

Furthermore, she said called for the respecting and implementing of Pržino Agreement. She expressed that Albanian reforms of juridical system is of the most importance, noting that ″once implemented, the judicial reform will be truly transformative for other areas too, so the country will have a more predictable, transparent environment for business and investors.″ [6]

Regarding the lack of rule of law and criticism in Montenegro she said that European Commission writes detailed report about the situation and that ″they are determined to help [Montenegro and other] countries address them in a European way, through dialogue, negotiation and support.″

Talking about potential blockade of the Republic of Serbia during EU accession, she said that EU encourages countries to solve their problem on the bilateral level and that she hopes that there will not be blockades. [6]
