Dr. Anis Nagi (Urdu: was a Pakistani poet, novelist and critic(born 1939-died 2010). He retired from government service.

Early life and education

Anis Nagi was born at Sheikhupura in 1939 to Moulvi Ibrahim Nagi District & Session Judge. He did his matriculation from the Muslim High School No. 2 and inter & graduation from Government College, Lahore]].He did his Masters from Oriental College.He stood First in M.A.Urdu examinations and was awarded a Gold Medal by the University of Punjab. Later, he got a doctorate in Urdu literature from University of the Punjab.

Literary & Teaching career

In early years of his lectureship at the Government College, Lahore, and later at the Government College, Faisalabad, Nagi passed West Pakistan Provincial Civil Service examination. After retirement from the civil service in 1999, he again joined GC University, Lahore, in 2003 as a visiting professor and remained associated with his alma mater until 2007. Anis Nagi was on the forefront of the literary movements of 1960s,being an advocate of Azad Nazam and New Poetry(Nai Shairey).He was a believer of Existentialism and fan of Pablo Neruda,Albert Camus & Jean Paul Satre and translated their works in Urdu.He himself wrote 79 books covering a broad arena varing from poerty,criticism,novels,short stories and biographies. He regularly wrote literary columns and himself editied a quarterly journal by the name of Danishwar. His Novel Behind the Wall(Dewar kay Pachey) was well appreciated by his readers and fans.His books Modern Urdu Poems from Pakistan was received well in the literary circles both nationally and internationally.Another book Nazir Ahmed ke Novel Nagari is also used as a reference book for M.A. Urdu Literature.

Bureaucratic career

During a long career as a bureaucrate in the provincial civil service of Punjab, Nagi served in various positions including Deputy Secretary Education. He retired as Member Board of Revenue, Government of Punjab.Despite being a Civil Servant he always remained a writer and a teacher and enjoyed it till his last breath.He breath his last in Punjab Public Library on 7 October 2010,just before giving a lecture to his Phd and MA students
