Arawa is the disputed capital and largest settlement in Bougainville Province in Papua New Guinea. The land where Arawa is now situated was previously a large expatriate plantation.
When Bougainville Copper Ltd needed a civic headquarters for dealing with the local and national government instrumentalities, Arawa Plantation was an obvious candidate, with its proximity to Kieta, the historic district headquarters.
The townsite was quickly developed through the 70s and 80s with residential neighbourhoods, churches and commercial enterprise.
