Bedok Green Secondary School (BGSS) (Chinese: 育青中学) is a co-educational neighbourhood government secondary school at in Bedok, Singapore.

History

Bedok Green Secondary School was founded in January 2001. In the initial year, it was housed on the temporary holding site at 2 Bedok South Road and moved to its current location on 31 December 2002.

The number of staff in the school has increased from 14 at the school's first opening to 139 in 2015, while pupil enrolment is currently about 1,100 at 2015.[1]

Campus

BGSS was officially opened on 4 July 2003 by the then Minister of State, Mr Raymond Lim.[1] Its campus consists of six blocks around a garden, a multi-purpose hall, seven computer labs (including an iPAD lab), six science labs, two design and technology workshops, 2 kitchens, a canteen, a library, a dance studio, a music room, a drama Black Box, some 40 classrooms, a synthetic field, and a Pupil Activity Centre (PAC).[2] There is a parade square, where students gather every morning for the flag-raising ceremony.

 Academic Information

Being an integrated secondary school, Anderson Secondary School offers three academic streams, namely the four-year Express course, as well as the Normal Course, comprising Normal (Academic) and Normal (Technical) academic tracks.

O Level Express Course

The Express Course is a nationwide four-year programme that leads up to the Singapore-Cambridge GCE Ordinary Level examination. [3]

Normal Course

The Normal Course is a nationwide 4-year programme leading to the Singapore-Cambridge GCE Normal Level examination, which runs either the Normal (Academic) curriculum or Normal (Technical) curriculum, abbreviated as N(A) and N(T) respectively. [4]

Normal (Academic) Course

In the Normal (Academic) course, students offer 5-8 subjects in the Singapore-Cambridge GCE Normal Level examination.Compulsory subjects include: [5]

  • Mother Tongue Language
  • Mathematics
  • Combined Humanities

Normal (Technical) Course

The Normal (Technical) course prepares students for a technical-vocational education at the Institute of Technical Education.[5] Students will offer 5-7 subjects in the Singapore-Cambridge GCE Normal Level examination. [5]

Co-Curricular Activities

BGSS offers a wide variety of Co-Curricular Activities (CCA) ranging from Clubs & Societies, Physical Sports, Visual & Performing Arts and Uniform Groups. The Performing Arts CCAs have been performing exceptionally in recent years. For the 2015 Singapore Youth Festival Arts Presentation, BGSS's Choir, Dance, and Malay Dance attained the Certificate of Distinction while its Concert Band, Guzheng Ensemble, and Drama Club attained the Certificate of Accomplishment.
