The Carol I National College (Romanian: Colegiul Naţional Carol I din Craiova) is a high school located in central Craiova, Romania, on Titu Maiorescu street. It is one of the most prestigious secondary education institutions in Romania.

[edit] History

The high school was established on May 20, 1826, by a decree of King Carol I of Romania, though actual construction only started in 1835. After suffering heavy damage from the earthquake of January 11, 1838, the school was rebuilt in November 1842. On November 11, 1885 the high school was named after King Carol I. It was re-built a second time after the 1976 earthquake that demolished a major part of its buildings.
