Chicago is the third largest city in the United States with an estimated population of 2,853,114 within the city limits in 2008. It is located in the state of Illinois, on the shores of Lake Michigan. The city is the county seat of Cook County. It is the central city of the Chicago–Naperville–Joliet IL-IN-WI Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is the third largest metropolitan area in the United States, with a population of over nine million.
