This is an old revision of this page, as edited by BlackJack (talk | contribs) at 16:49, 11 November 2016 (BlackJack moved page Category:Former major cricket clubs to Category:Former senior cricket clubs: "major cricket" is a confusing term, senior is preferable as an adjective). This category has been created to hold articles about cricket clubs that played first-class or important matches in the past, but which do not hold first-class or List A status in the 21st century. Some of the clubs are extant while others have folded, though some of the latter have been refounded as minor clubs. The initial purpose of the category was to identify clubs and/or teams from the 18th and 19th centuries which played in the "great matches" (the term in common currency at the time) which form the sport's historical record.

Note that important and first-class cricket, along with historic single wicket and the modern forms of List A and Twenty20 are different types of senior cricket. Although the term was used loosely for a long time in the 19th century, first-class cricket per se did not exist officially until 1895 in Great Britain and until 1947 in the rest of the world.
