Schools of medicine in the Philippines are graduate schools offering the Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree. The M.D. is a four-year professional degree program which qualifies the degree holder, after a one-year postgraduate rotating internship, to take the licensure exam for medical doctors in the country. The first five medical schools in the Philippines were opened under the University of Santo Tomas, University of the Philippines, Southwestern University, Manila Central University in 1949 and Far Eastern University in 1952. Today, these five schools are still in existence with the two oldest and the fifth oldest schools as the three most prestigious in the Philippines being the recipient of the Center of Excellence Award in Medical Education in 1986 by the Department of Education, Philippine Board of Medical Education and the Association of Philippine Medical Colleges. The University of the Philippines and the University of Santo Tomas were also honored by CHED with the same award in 2005.
