Categorizing and subcategorizing[edit]

In my opinion, Articles about Egyptian people shouldn't be added to this category. Instead, please consider adding articles to one or more of the existing subcategories or creating new subcategories.

  1. We already have a List of Egyptians. This article is listed in the Egyptian people category. So, there is no need to identify all Egyptian people by listing all articles here.
  2. Adding an article to a subcategory makes it easier for users to find related articles. E.g you can reach an article in the Category: Egyptian writers through all its parent categoriesCategory:Egyptian people by occupation, Category:Writers by nationality and Category: Egyptian literature. This is better than adding it to both Category: Egyptian people And Category: writers.
  3. Quoting from WP:CG#Some general guidelines: "Articles should not usually be in both a category and its subcategory". Also "There are often occasions when articles might ideally be moved from a category to two or more of its subcategories, but not all of the subcategories exist. In such cases consider creating the additional subcategories, but if you decide not to do so, leave the articles in the parent category for the time being".
  4. The current situation of the category is messy. Some articles are listed here, in Category:Egyptian people stubs and in other subactegories as well. Others e.g. Taha Hussein (a well-known Egyptian writer) is only in the Egyptian writers subcategory.
  5. By time, the number of articles about Egyptian people will increase and it will get even messier.
  6. Please refer to similar categories e.g. the well-organized Category: Canadian people, and Category: American people which contains – by the time I was writing this- only 16 articles (a very small number considering the number of articles about American people)--Wedian 18:38, 20 February 2006 (UTC).[reply]
