I wonder if 'rugby league' in the title of this category shouldn't be capitalized, as it seems to contain coaches of the New Zealand Rugby League as opposed to rugby league coaches of New Zealand nationality.--Jeff79 (talk) 04:18, 8 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The category includes #1 coaches of district/zone teams, #2 coaches of the national team, #3 coaches of the New Zealand Māori side and #4 the category for coaches of club teams. In #1 they would be coaches appointed by the various regional RL's (eg, Waikato Rugby League) and would play in various NZRL sanctioned competitions, In #2 they are coaches appointed by the NZRL, in #3 they are coaches appointed by the NZMRL and sometimes play in various NZRL sanctioned competitions, in #4 they coach in regional competitions. I guess it could be changed, but I don't really see the need for it and the link may be at times tenuous. If you really wanted to change it perhaps Rugby league coaches in New Zealand by team? However, in its current situation it matches the equivalents such as Category:Australian rugby league footballers by team. I would argue that that consistency alone is why it should remain (or all of the such categories are re-ordered). Mattlore (talk) 04:30, 8 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, so it is meant to be 'New Zealand' as in nationality? Couldn't a foreigner easily come along and coach one of these teams? I haven't checked, but perhaps in the past one or two may have.--Jeff79 (talk) 06:45, 8 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. Just as the category I mention above leads to "Western Reds players" and the like. Maybe we need to move a whole lot of RL categories. This is a wider problem than just this category. Mattlore (talk) 07:42, 8 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed. Somewhere along the way it got messed up. The only way a category with this name could work is if it contained things like "New Zealand Wigan Warriors coaches" and "New Zealand Samoa national rugby league team coaches". Categorising coaches or players by both nationality and team is unnecessary since everyone's already categorised by nationality and team separately. I'm not sure why it happened. Maybe the goal was to have the nationality relate to the team rather than the coach. Something like Category:Rugby league coaches > Category:Rugby league coaches by team > Category:Rugby league coaches by New Zealand team > Category:Rugby league coaches by New Zealand representative team / Category:Rugby league coaches by New Zealand club. Do you think such a line of categorising is worth pursuing?--Jeff79 (talk) 08:21, 8 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I guess the first step is working out how big the "problem" is. How many coaches or players categories are there such as this one? Mattlore (talk) 08:52, 8 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It's pretty clear that any category named '[Nationality] rugby league [coaches/footballers] by team' is unworkable and must be removed. I noticed Category:Rugby league coaches by club is probably overfilled so could be divided into Category:Rugby league coaches by Australian club, Category:Rugby league coaches by English club, Category:Rugby league coaches by New Zealand club, Category:Rugby league coches by French club, Category:Rugby league coaches by Welsh club, etc. The same should be done for players. Clearly, categories like Category:Rugby league players in France by club or Category:Rugby league players in New Zealand by club aren't going to work unless we want to keep track of where all these people are living (surprise, surprise: they were created by that 'Youndbuckerz' character). The clubs are in France. Not the players. It should be Category:Rugby league footballers by French club.--Jeff79 (talk) 10:23, 8 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed, as I said above if I was you I'd work out all the offending categories of players/coaches. Then I'd put them all to CfD in one go, that'd save time and effort. Mattlore (talk) 05:17, 9 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
